What Happened?

Avis (CAR) stock dropped 8% after the company posted Q1 2026 earnings that told two very different stories.

On revenue, the company reported $2.53 billion, above estimates of $2.43 billion. Even better, it was the first quarter of positive revenue growth in the Americas in 10 quarters.

Pricing finally turned positive for the first time since late 2022, which is a meaningful shift for a business that had been struggling with oversupply for years.

But on the bottom line, the numbers disappointed.

  • EPS came in at −$8.01 against a forecast of −$7.50.
  • A big chunk of that miss came from fleet write-downs. Management made a deliberate call to offload vehicles quickly in Q1 rather than chase the last dollar on every sale.
  • The goal was to normalize depreciation costs faster — and it’s already working. Monthly depreciation in the Americas dropped from above $500 in January to the mid-$300s by March.

There’s also a separate story unfolding around Avis stock itself.

  • Pentwater Capital, a large shareholder, sold $1.75 billion worth of Avis shares on April 22 and 23.
  • That sale — disclosed after market close the day before earnings — sparked a sharp stock decline.
  • CEO Brian Choi addressed it directly, saying Avis will “aggressively pursue all rights” on behalf of shareholders after Pentwater acknowledged the trades may have violated SEC short-swing profit rules.

Despite the EPS miss, the company raised its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance to $850 million to $1 billion.

Management cited better pricing and tighter fleet discipline as the drivers. They also noted strong early bookings in World Cup host cities heading into the summer.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Avis Stock

The pre-market selloff in Avis stock reflects frustration with the earnings miss, but the picture is more complicated than the headline number suggests.

The fleet reset was painful but intentional. Pricing is finally moving in the right direction. And the business enters summer — its most important season — with what management calls its healthiest fleet in years.

The Pentwater overhang adds noise to an already volatile Avis stock story. Until that situation is resolved and the summer numbers come in, shares may stay choppy regardless of fundamentals.
