Vertiv Delivers Where It Counts
Vertiv (VRT) shares fell about 11% over the past week before Tuesday’s second quarter report, but the company delivered strong results that raised full-year guidance for the second consecutive quarter. Diluted EPS grew 53% year over year, while adjusted diluted EPS surged 60%, comfortably ahead of Wall Street’s pre-earnings estimates.
Vertiv makes the power distribution and liquid cooling systems that keep AI data centers running, sitting beneath the servers and chips everyone talks about. Demand for this infrastructure has exploded as hyperscalers race to build AI compute capacity. As a result, Vertiv’s order backlog has swelled past $15 billion.

Revenue for the quarter came in at $3.27 billion, slightly below the $3.38 billion analysts expected. The profit beat and guidance raise mattered more to investors than the modest top-line miss. Management lifted its full-year adjusted EPS outlook to $6.65 – $6.75, up from prior guidance, signaling confidence that AI-driven demand is not slowing.
Executive Chairman Dave Cote captured the broader setup on the company’s prior earnings call, saying “we’re still in the early stage of the infrastructure build out for AI.” If Vertiv stock can hold this week’s post-earnings gains, the pullback into the print may end up looking like a buying opportunity rather than a warning sign.

Does Vertiv’s Selloff Create a Buying Opportunity?

Under valuation model assumptions realized through 12/31/28, the stock is modeled using:
- Revenue Growth (CAGR): 27.7%
- Operating Margins: 20.4%
- Exit P/E Multiple: 33.0x
Based on these inputs, the model estimates a target price of $386, implying 43.1% upside from the current share price and a 15.9% annualized return over the next 2.4 years.
A 15.9% annualized return exceeds the 15% threshold, signaling undervaluation or durable long-term growth potential. This positions Vertiv among the more attractive names in the AI infrastructure basket, even after this week’s sharp pullback.
Vertiv’s 27.7% revenue assumption understates performance; guidance implies ~28% organic growth and faster backlog expansion. Margins stand out: the model’s 20.4% operating margin exceeds the trailing twelve-month EBIT margin of 18.8%, indicating continued operating leverage with scale.

Vertiv’s 33.0x exit multiple is meaningfully below the stock’s current NTM P/E near 40x, so the model assumes some multiple compression alongside strong earnings growth. That is a reasonable assumption given how much of the AI infrastructure trade has already been priced into names across the sector, and it helps explain why the model still shows solid upside even without assuming a valuation expansion.
Vertiv’s competitive advantage rests on being one of the few vendors that can supply integrated power and cooling systems at data center scale, rather than piecing together components from multiple suppliers. That full stack positioning has become increasingly valuable as liquid cooling adoption accelerates alongside denser AI chip deployments.

Vertiv vs the Data Center Infrastructure Field
Eaton (ETN) is Vertiv’s closest direct competitor in data center power infrastructure, and it trades at a similar premium multiple given its own exposure to electrification and grid modernization trends, though Eaton’s growth is more diversified across industrial and utility end markets rather than concentrated in AI data centers specifically.

Generac (GNRC) offers a narrower comparison since it focuses primarily on backup power generation rather than the broader power and cooling portfolio Vertiv provides across the data center. Generac trades at a forward P/E near 22x despite quarterly revenue growth of just 12.4%, well below Vertiv’s pace, which underscores how much of a growth premium Vertiv commands within this comparison set.
Schneider Electric (SBGSF) competes with Vertiv in both power management and increasingly in liquid cooling, and the two companies are often named together as the primary beneficiaries of AI data center capital spending. Vertiv’s edge has come from moving quickly on liquid cooling acquisitions like ThermoKey and Strategic Thermal Labs, expanding its cooling capabilities faster than some larger, more diversified rivals have managed.

What’s Driving VRT Stock Going Forward?
The clearest forward catalyst is backlog conversion. With orders above $15 billion, the pace at which Vertiv turns that backlog into recognized revenue will shape whether the raised guidance proves conservative or aggressive over the coming quarters.
Manufacturing capacity expansion is another key theme, since Vertiv has opened new facilities in Malaysia and expanded its Italy campus specifically to double chiller output by the end of 2026. Those investments aim to reduce the lead times that have historically constrained how quickly large orders convert into shipped, revenue-generating equipment.
Liquid cooling adoption represents the biggest structural tailwind ahead. As AI chips grow more power dense, traditional air cooling becomes less viable, and Vertiv’s recent acquisitions position it to capture a larger share of that cooling spend as hyperscalers upgrade their facilities.
Investors should also watch EMEA recovery, since that region has lagged the Americas in growth and management has guided for improvement in the back half of 2026. If EMEA demand accelerates alongside continued AI infrastructure spending in the US, Vertiv’s growth could broaden beyond its current concentration in North American hyperscale customers.
