What Happened?

Sherwin-Williams stock entered the quarter facing a central investor concern: could the paint and coatings leader continue growing while housing activity remained weak and raw-material costs increased? The company delivered a stronger answer than expected, sending shares up about 8% today to around $354 after reporting better-than-expected second-quarter results and raising its 2026 outlook. The advance showed that investors increasingly believe company-specific execution can drive growth without a broad recovery in paint demand.

The stock rose specifically because adjusted EPS increased 9.5% to $3.70, beating expectations of around $3.50, while net sales grew 7.5% to $6.79 billion compared with the roughly $6.6 billion consensus estimate. Paint Stores Group sales increased 5.1%, Performance Coatings grew 6.3%, and same-store sales at company-operated paint stores rose 4.2%. Consumer Brands sales advanced 21.5%, helped significantly by the Suvinil acquisition, while the broader results showed that pricing, new-account wins, and market-share gains could support growth without meaningful improvement in residential construction or do-it-yourself demand.

On this week’s earnings call, Sherwin-Williams raised its full-year sales outlook to mid- to high-single-digit growth and increased adjusted EPS guidance to $11.80 to $12.20 from $11.50 to $11.90. Adjusted EBITDA increased 10.5% to $1.5 billion, expanding adjusted EBITDA margin by 60 basis points to 21.5%, while an 8% Paint Stores price increase beginning September 1 is intended to offset raw-material and other cost inflation. CEO Heidi Petz said the company must “be our own catalyst for growth,” as Protective & Marine sales increased by a mid-teens percentage for an eighth consecutive quarter of at least high-single-digit growth, supported by data centers, semiconductor infrastructure, and manufacturing onshoring.

Analyst revisions and competitor results added context to the rally. BMO Capital raised its Sherwin-Williams price target to around $400 from around $355 and maintained an Outperform rating, while BofA Securities lifted its target to around $380 from around $370 and retained a Neutral rating. PPG Industries and RPM International compete with Sherwin-Williams across architectural and industrial coatings, with PPG’s first-quarter net sales rising 7% but organic sales increasing only 1%, while RPM’s fiscal third-quarter sales grew 8.9% to $1.61 billion. Sherwin-Williams’ company-operated store network and direct relationships with professional painters remain important advantages because they help the company win accounts and capture more customer spending while industry demand stays uneven.

Is Sherwin-Williams Fairly Valued?

Under valuation assumptions, the stock is modeled using:

  • Revenue Growth (CAGR): Around 5%
  • Operating Margins: Around 18%
  • Exit P/E Multiple: Around 25x

Sherwin-Williams’ EBITDA is projected to increase from around $4.6 billion in 2025 to around $6.4 billion by 2030, while EBITDA margins improve from around 20% to around 21%, reflecting pricing, cost control, market-share gains, and a more favorable business mix.

The September price increase could protect profitability if Sherwin-Williams offsets higher raw-material, energy, and logistics costs without weakening customer retention, making the pricing actually captured more important than the announced 8% increase.

Protective & Marine coatings could remain a major growth engine as data centers, semiconductor plants, water-treatment facilities, pharmaceutical projects, and manufacturing onshoring require coatings for structural steel, flooring, equipment, and interior spaces.

The model’s roughly 25x exit P/E is close to Sherwin-Williams’ ten-year historical average of around 26x and below its five-year average of around 28x, so the projected return does not depend on an unusually aggressive valuation.

Based on the current price near $354 and a valuation-model target of around $380, Sherwin-Williams appears fairly valued with around 8% upside through the end of 2028, while performance during the rest of 2026 will depend on pricing outpacing inflation, continued professional-customer account wins, and infrastructure demand offsetting residential weakness.
