What Happened?

Johnson and Johnson (JNJ) stock is in focus today after the company announced a $5.5 billion agreement to resolve its remaining talc litigation. The deal is conditioned on at least 95% of remaining claimants agreeing to participate, and it would wrap up roughly 76,000 pending ovarian talc cases.

The settlement follows a favorable court ruling. On July 22, 2026, a federal court overseeing the multi-district litigation ordered plaintiffs to explain why their remaining claims shouldn’t be dismissed, since they couldn’t prove the company’s talc products caused any specific person’s ovarian cancer.

That ruling came after plaintiffs withdrew their expert witnesses on causation in two test cases, following a hearing that found their opinions weren’t based on reliable science.

Johnson & Johnson’s Worldwide VP of Litigation, Erik Haas, said the company believes it would have continued winning cases if litigation had continued, since it has already prevailed in most ovarian cases tried so far.

But the settlement allows the company to move past the issue and focus on its core business.

Under the terms, the first payment of up to $3 billion is due in 2027, with no further payments required before 2028.

This builds on earlier progress, since the company already settled about 95% of filed mesothelioma lawsuits, all state consumer protection claims, and all talc-supplier disputes.

Johnson and Johnson has maintained that decades of independent research show talc is safe and doesn’t cause cancer.
