What Happened?

Union Pacific (UNP) stock is in focus after UBS upgraded shares to Buy from Neutral and raised its price target to $339 from $310.

The bank pointed to more cargo growth ahead as the reason for turning more bullish, with a 2027 volume growth forecast of 3.5% tied to strength across the company’s key customer markets.

UBS now expects 2026 earnings per share of $13.41, about 3% above Wall Street consensus, and 2027 EPS of $14.90, roughly 5% above consensus.

Shares traded just above $280 on Wednesday, down $2.00, even as the upgrade came through.

The upgrade follows strong results from Union Pacific. In Q2, the company posted adjusted earnings of $3.41 per share, beating the $3.19 analysts expected, on revenue of $6.9 billion versus the $6.65 billion forecast.

Freight revenue grew 12% year-over-year, driven by volume growth, higher fuel surcharges, and solid core pricing.

CEO Jim Vena’s team also raised full-year guidance to high single-digit earnings growth, citing continued efficiency gains and record operational performance.

At a Morgan Stanley conference the day of the UBS upgrade, Vena said carloads were running up around 5% for the current quarter, with broad-based growth across intermodal and industrial shipments.

He noted the company is still managing rising fuel costs, recently paying between $5.20 and $5.30 per gallon, but said the underlying business remains strong enough to offset that pressure.

Union Pacific also continues working through its proposed merger with Norfolk Southern.

The Surface Transportation Board accepted the merger application on May 28, starting a formal review clock.

Vena said the company has secured a settlement agreement with Canadian National addressing overlap concerns, along with support from more than 2,000 groups and over 500 customers.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Union Pacific Stock

The gap between UBS’s bullish call and the stock’s modest dip on the same day suggests the market is still digesting the news rather than reacting either way sharply.

With UBS now targeting $339 while Union Pacific stock trades around $280, the setup implies meaningful room to run if the bank’s volume and earnings forecasts hold up.

UNP Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

The real test for Union Pacific stock going forward will be whether the company can keep delivering the kind of volume growth and cost discipline it showed in Q2, while also navigating the ongoing merger review process.

Both will determine whether the higher 2027 earnings path UBS laid out actually comes to pass.
