What Happened?
Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed at $237.09 on October 19, 2026, up 4.06% as chip stocks bounced. That still leaves shares 17.4% below their $287.01 close on October 6, the day of its Investor Day, after an eight-session slide to $227.83 on October 16.
Analysts moved the other way. TIKR data shows the fiscal 2031 revenue consensus at about $74.5 billion on October 19, up from about $46.7 billion on September 30, although the number of analysts forecasting that year grew from three to nine. From September 30 to October 16, the mean Street target rose to $339.36 from $290.97, while the stock’s NTM P/E fell to 40.32x from 48.42x.
The pressure came from fears about AI spending and how it gets funded. Marvell’s plan, laid out in its investor relations materials and covered in TIKR’s Investor Day recap, already assumes that spending growth slows.
Marvell Fell 9% on October 14, Then Rebounded 4% on October 19
The worst session was October 14, when Marvell fell 8.72%. That day, Broadcom (AVGO) fell 3.10%, Nvidia (NVDA) 3.16%, AMD (AMD) 5.73%, and Oracle (ORCL) 8.83%. A strong U.S. inflation report revived fears that higher rates would make AI investment more expensive to fund. On October 12, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan had compared AI sector investing to casino gambling, according to Reuters.
On October 16, Tan’s warning that capital could constrain AI growth hit custom-chip stocks harder than the broader chip group, and Marvell closed down 5.56%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index then rose 1.6% on October 19, snapping an eight-session losing streak, its longest in 18 years, as Treasury yields and oil prices eased.
Marvell’s own news was positive. On October 13, it began sampling a 3.2-terabit retimer and a second-generation 1.6-terabit cable chip and formed a server-security working group with Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle. Shares rose 1.08% that day before the October 14 drop.

Marvell’s Plan Already Assumes AI Spending Slows to 20%
Marvell’s targets assume data center capital spending compounds about 35% a year from calendar 2025 to 2030. Within that, growth slows from roughly 70% now to about 20% by the end. “So we think we’ve built in our model just a lot of cushion for the AI business to kind of digest over time,” said Chairman and CEO Matt Murphy.
The plan doesn’t count all of its biggest deal. Marvell’s Google agreement outlines an opportunity of up to $120 billion in custom products over 6.5 years, tied to milestones rather than booked. Murphy said fiscal 2031 includes only “some portion” of it.
Concentration cuts the other way. President and COO Chris Koopmans said the top four U.S. hyperscalers alone can deliver most of the goals. That ties the plan to the same buyers whose AI financing the market now questions.
CFO Dan Durn’s model calls for a 44% to 46% operating margin and more than $30 of non-GAAP EPS in fiscal 2031 at the $80 billion revenue midpoint. Custom chips carry lower gross margins. Durn said the low end of the 56% to 59% range likely requires custom revenue to beat its base case significantly, calling the mix “a bit of a hedge.”

The TIKR model’s mid case, the only case on the card, targets around $1,710 by January 31, 2031. That’s about five times the Street’s mean target, which looks only one year ahead.
The target equals about 53 times TIKR’s fiscal 2031 consensus EPS of $32.42, the fiscal year ending at the model’s horizon. Today, the stock trades at about 56 times this fiscal year’s consensus EPS of $4.22. The scenario assumes the multiple eases slightly while earnings grow about 7.7 times.
On the upside, custom revenue topping its more-than-$12-billion fiscal 2029 target would pull earnings forward. Even at a third of that multiple, $32.42 of EPS would value the stock above $237.09. The real downside is the earnings themselves: a slower custom ramp, or a spending pause at one of the top four buyers.
Conclusion
The fiscal third-quarter report is the first test after the selloff; last year’s came on December 2. Revenue at or above the $3.15 billion guidance midpoint, with non-GAAP gross margin inside the guided 57.5% to 58.5%, keeps the plan on schedule. A margin below 57.5% would mean custom mix is pressing harder than the hedge Durn described.
