What Happened?

Vertiv Holdings (VRT) now trades at a lower forward multiple than at any quarter-end TIKR shows since September 2025, even as earnings estimates climbed. Its next-twelve-month P/E ratio fell from about 49 times on June 30 to about 26 times at the October 19 close of $206.08. Over roughly the same stretch, NTM EPS estimates rose from around $6.80 to around $7.90.

Third-quarter results arrive before the open on October 28, and the release will post with Vertiv’s investor relations materials. The CFO has already named where he expects more of the margin gains to come from.

The CFO Pointed to the Factories, Then Vertiv Changed Who Runs Them

At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on September 8, CFO Craig Chamberlin tied Vertiv’s target of 27%-plus adjusted operating margins by 2030 to volume leverage and to labor, overhead, and purchasing productivity in its plants. On plant productivity, he said: “I’d say in the past, it’s some spot where we probably haven’t been as effective as we could have been.” Pricing should still help, he said, probably at a smaller scale.

On October 5, Vertiv named Michael Resha, previously global head of injection and stamping at Stellantis, as Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, Logistics and Operational Excellence. Predecessor Anders Karlborg moved into a special operations projects role to support the transition. The company did not connect the change to margins, so linking it to Chamberlin’s remark is an inference.

Chamberlin also flagged a mix risk. Product margins run a little below services, so products outgrowing services would dilute margins. Vertiv plans to grow services at a similar pace to offset that.

Three Target Cuts and a Sell Initiation Ahead of the Print

AI infrastructure stocks slid from October 14 after hot inflation data lifted rate-hike bets and raised concerns about financing the build-out. Vertiv fell 3.88% on October 16, a session with no company announcement, and closed at $206.08 on October 19. That left it about 45% below its peak on TIKR’s drawdown measure.

RBC cut its target to $323 from $337 on October 14, Mizuho to $280 from $300 on October 15, and Morgan Stanley to $330 from $350 on October 16. All three kept positive ratings. Mizuho’s cut reportedly reflected model adjustments across electrical equipment names ahead of earnings.

GLJ Research had already initiated coverage at Sell with a $188 target on October 6. TIKR’s consensus shows a Street mean near $334, with 23 Buys, 3 Outperforms, 4 Holds, and no Sells.

The last print still hangs over the stock. Second-quarter sales of $3.27 billion missed consensus by 3.22%, and shares fell 17.26% on July 29. The selloff that followed carried into September. Several law firms, including Hagens Berman and Pomerantz, have announced investigations tied to that quarter; their allegations are unproven.

At roughly 26 times NTM earnings, Vertiv now trades in line with Eaton (ETN), below GE Vernova (GEV) at about 44 times, and above the six-peer median of about 24 times.

The mid case is the only scenario the model card prices at its December 31, 2030 horizon. From $206.08, it points to around $458, a total return of about 122%, or roughly 21% a year over 4.2 years.

Its assumptions, set over a 2025 to 2035 forecast, include about 15% annual revenue growth, a net income margin near 20%, and a P/E that shrinks around 2.5% a year. That means the return does not depend on the multiple recovering.

The primary risk is that plant productivity lags volume growth and caps margins. Faster progress toward the 27% operating margin target is the upside; further multiple compression is the downside.

Conclusion

Vertiv guided third-quarter adjusted operating profit to $898 million to $938 million, a 24% to 25% margin, on sales of $3.65 billion to $3.85 billion. Consensus EBIT already sits near $924 million, above the $918 million midpoint, so a result there only meets expectations.

Profit above $938 million, with commentary on plant productivity under Resha, would support the factory-margin case. A result below $918 million would make 26 times earnings look less like a floor.
