What Happened?

Arista Networks (ANET) closed at a record $216.74 on October 9, 2026, then gave back 18.34% over the next five sessions to finish at $176.98 on October 16. Arista reported no miss and cut no guidance in that stretch. Reuters tied the selling to doubts that debt-funded AI infrastructure firms can earn enough to cover their borrowing, with hot inflation data and higher oil adding pressure. The chip index fell for an eighth straight session on October 16.

Shares rebounded 3.37% to $182.95 on October 19 as chip stocks rallied on easing Treasury yields and oil prices. That still left the stock 15.59% below its record. Arista held $13,343.3 million in cash and marketable securities and no debt as of June 30, 2026, so its exposure runs through customers rather than its balance sheet. The next test arrives November 3, per its investor relations materials.

Tight Credit Sharpens Arista’s Cost-per-Token Pitch

The sharpest losses hit neoclouds, the GPU cloud providers built for AI. CoreWeave (CRWV) shares sank as its bond yields neared 15% on October 14, and the selloff spread to AI colocation firms the next day.

Neoclouds are one customer group Arista is courting beyond the hyperscalers. At Citi’s Global TMT Conference on September 10, CFO Chantelle Breithaupt explained what wins them: “What makes them competitively advantaged is their token cost optimization.” She said some neoclouds that first went with a competitor have come to Arista, perhaps for their second installation. She named no specific customers.

Costlier financing raises the value of that pitch, because a neocloud paying more to borrow needs the lowest cost per token to compete. The risk is volume: if credit stays tight, fewer neoclouds build at all.

The slide also overlapped Arista’s latest launch. On October 7, it announced Etherlink SU-144, a rack-scale Ethernet design linking up to 144 accelerators, built with partners including Meta and Microsoft. It is a product announcement with no disclosed orders. CEO Jayshree Ullal’s trusts sold shares near $217 on October 7 and October 8 to 9 under a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 plan.

A Cheaper Multiple, With Margins Still the Open Question

The selloff cut Arista’s NTM P/E to 38.05x on October 16 from 43.83x on September 30. That put it roughly level with optical supplier Lumentum (LITE) at 37.82x.

Pricing aims to hold margins, not lift them. Breithaupt said the main 2026 price increase was sized by each customer’s memory content, with committed backlog left at old prices. She added that customer negotiations decide how much of each increase Arista keeps. “We’re not looking to accrete margin,” she said.

Non-GAAP gross margin was 63.4% in the second quarter, down from 65.6% a year earlier, and she cited guidance of 62% to 64%. Arista guided third-quarter non-GAAP operating margin to 48% to 49%, against 49.9% in the second quarter. She said she believes fab and memory supply is sorted through 2027, while parts such as circuit boards and capacitors remain tight.

This uses the mid case because, across the model’s 2025-to-2035 forecast table, it lets the P/E slip about 0.4% a year. That means returns come from earnings rather than a re-rating. The same table assumes revenue growth around 23% a year and a net income margin around 41%.

Street estimates support the early years, rising from about $12.7 billion in 2026 to about $29.8 billion in 2030, though only three analysts reach 2030. Scale-across, which links AI clusters across separate data centers, is one newer source of growth that Breithaupt expects to show up in 2026 through 2028.

The primary risk is an AI spending pause. On the same table, the high case assumes around 26% growth and the low case around 21%, so even the low case models a gain. A spending freeze sits outside all three cases.

Conclusion

The fourth-quarter guide on November 3 matters more than the quarter itself. The Street expects about $3.33 billion for the third quarter, in line with the ~$3.3 billion guide, and about $3.6 billion for the fourth. A fourth-quarter guide at or above $3.6 billion would suggest neocloud strain has not reached Arista’s orders. A guide below it would suggest the October selling spotted something early.
