What Happened?

Blue Duck Capital Partners says the augmented reality glasses Snap Inc. (SNAP) has not shipped yet are worth $5 billion. That is close to half of Snap’s roughly $10.6 billion market cap at the October 19 close. In an October 6 open letter, the shareholder urged the board to sell 20% of the Specs unit to outside investors for $1 billion. It argued the stock could reach $12 to $14.

The letter is a proposal. Snap’s October 8 release still describes Specs as a wholly owned subsidiary. In March, a second activist, Irenic Capital Management, argued for the opposite fix: spinning Specs off or shutting it down.

Shares rose 16.1% from September 30 to a $6.27 close on October 19. That run included a 4.81% drop on October 16, when the Nasdaq fell 2.1%, and a 2.28% gain on October 19. Snap’s investor relations materials show management already took a position on funding Specs in August.

Barclays Asked the Blue Duck Question on August 3

On the August 3 earnings call, Barclays analyst Ross Sandler asked whether setting up Specs as a company outside Snapchat was off the table. Evan Spiegel, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, did not answer that part directly. He said free cash flow had inflected enough that “we have the ability to simultaneously invest in the future of Specs, offset dilution, and strengthen our balance sheet.”

MoffettNathanson’s Michael Nathanson asked why Snap does not build Specs with a partner. Spiegel pointed to full-stack integration, from developer tools to the operating system and optical engine, saying “all of those things have to work perfectly together.” That argues against handing the hardware to a partner. It does not argue against a minority investor who supplies cash and leaves the stack alone.

Specs, Buybacks and AI Servers Draw on One Cash Pile

Snap reported $706 million of free cash flow for the 12 months through June. That figure is after Specs costs, which Blue Duck estimates near $500 million a year; Snap does not disclose the number.

CFO Doug Hott guided 2026 stock-based compensation to about $1.05 billion, roughly 10% of Snap’s October 19 market cap. Buybacks have held fully diluted share growth to about 2% over five years. Hott plans a new multiyear program to keep the count stable in 2027.

Two more costs press on the same cash:

  • AI infrastructure: Hott raised full-year infrastructure cost guidance to $1.65 billion to $1.70 billion, from $1.60 billion to $1.65 billion, for AI and machine learning capacity.
  • Litigation: Snap’s latest quarterly filing lists two more Los Angeles teen social media addiction bellwether trials, including Snap in October. A consolidated trial with Meta Platforms (META) is set for October 28. Snap settled the first two bellwethers confidentially before trial, and the allegations are unproven.

By Blue Duck’s estimate, a $1 billion Specs sale would cover about two years of Specs spending without new Snap shares. At 80% ownership, though, Specs costs would likely still run through Snap’s consolidated results.

The Street holds 8 Buys, 2 Outperforms, 29 Holds, 2 Underperforms and 1 Sell, per TIKR. UBS raised its target to $7 on October 14 while keeping a Neutral rating.

TIKR’s mid-case targets around $9.90 by December 31, 2030, about 58% above the $6.27 close on October 19, or roughly 11% a year. The Street’s near-term mean target sits near $7.40, 19% above that close, so the two figures measure different horizons.

TIKR consensus has revenue rising from $5.93 billion in 2025 to around $9.1 billion in 2030, a CAGR near 9%, though only eight analysts project that far. Normalized net margin climbs from about 11% to about 24%, and GAAP net income turns positive in 2027.

Spiegel expects mass Specs adoption only near the end of the decade, so little of that path likely depends on glasses sales. Upside would come from outside money lifting Specs spending off Snap’s cash. If legal costs climb or ad growth stalls, the mid case becomes harder to reach.

Conclusion

Snap holds its Q3 call on November 4 at 5 p.m. Eastern. Revenue at or above the $1.74 billion top of guidance, plus any disclosure on Specs spending or the size of the 2027 buyback, would show the core can carry every claim on its cash. Revenue near the $1.70 billion low end would make outside money for Specs look less optional.
