What Happened?
Coinbase (COIN) stock dropped more than 13% in early market trading after the crypto exchange posted a much bigger loss than Wall Street expected.
Analysts had modeled a loss of just $0.23 per share. Instead, Coinbase reported a loss of $1.36 per share, or $359.5 million total, a sharp reversal from the $1.43 billion profit it posted a year earlier.
Revenue also missed the mark, coming in at $1.2 billion versus the $1.3 billion analysts expected, and down from $1.5 billion a year ago.
This marks the third straight quarter Coinbase has missed Wall Street’s revenue and earnings forecasts.
It’s worth noting that Coinbase’s net income often swings wildly because of accounting rules. The company has to mark its large crypto holdings to market value at the end of each quarter, even if it hasn’t sold anything. That means a chunk of this quarter’s loss reflects paper value changes, not necessarily operating weakness.
Still, the underlying business had real soft spots. Both subscription revenue at $555 million and transaction revenue at $599 million missed expectations and came in lower than the prior year.
Stablecoin revenue was a particular surprise, falling to $292 million, well short of the $327.2 million analysts were looking for and down $17 million from a year ago.
The broader backdrop didn’t help. Bitcoin traded mostly range-bound during the quarter, and bitcoin ETFs saw sustained outflows. High interest rates and general market volatility also kept many investors away from riskier assets like crypto.

There were some bright spots too.
CEO Brian Armstrong pointed out that Coinbase hit a new all-time high for market share in crypto trading, arguing that shows the company can perform across different market conditions.
Subscription revenue, while down year over year, still made up a bigger share of total revenue this quarter, which management sees as a sign that its push to diversify beyond core trading is gaining ground.
On the earnings call, executives also highlighted growth areas like prediction markets, stablecoin partnerships, and early efforts around AI agent transactions on Coinbase’s Base network.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Coinbase Stock
A loss eight times bigger than expected, paired with a third straight quarter of missed targets, is a tough combination for any stock to shake off.
The market’s reaction shows investors are still primarily judging Coinbase stock on trading volumes and core financial results, even as the company talks up its diversification story.

Management’s message is that Coinbase is becoming more than a bitcoin trading bet, pointing to subscriptions, stablecoins, and new products as the future.
But this quarter’s numbers suggest that story hasn’t fully convinced the market yet.
Until subscription and stablecoin revenue start growing again instead of shrinking, Coinbase stock is likely to stay tied closely to the ups and downs of the broader crypto market.
