What Happened?

McDonald’s (MCD) is using artificial intelligence more and more to set menu prices across the U.S. and some global markets, according to a Reuters report.

The company’s pricing engine uses machine learning to study data from millions of daily transactions across nearly 14,000 U.S. restaurants.

It then suggests what McDonald’s calls “the optimal price” for each menu item at each location. One key factor is an estimate of how much customers in a given area are willing to pay.

This has widened price gaps between nearby stores. In Fresno, California, one company-run store sells a Big Mac for $5.69. Another location just two miles away charges $6.89, a 21% premium.

Reuters could not confirm whether the AI tool caused that difference.

McDonald’s says franchisees are free to set their own prices and called the tool “a tool, not a mandate.”

Still, five store owners told Reuters they felt pressured to follow its recommendations. Since January, McDonald’s has required franchisees to engage constructively with its approved pricing tools.

What the Market Is Telling Us About McDonald’s Stock

For McDonald’s stock, this story matters because pricing sits at the center of the company’s turnaround plan.

The business model explains the tension. McDonald’s earns most of its money from a percentage of franchisee revenue.

So lower prices that bring in more customers can help headquarters, even if store-level margins shrink.

Franchisees, meanwhile, face costs up 36% since 2019, according to the National Restaurant Association.

That friction showed up in recent results. U.S. comparable sales grew just 0.8% in Q2.

CEO Chris Kempczinski said about a third of franchisees didn’t follow the company’s under-$3 menu pricing guidance, and their results were softer.

At Investor Day, CFO Ian Borden said U.S. comps turned slightly negative in July and August, and he expects the U.S. to be slightly negative for Q3.

McDonald’s also called its pricing engine “industry-leading” at Investor Day. It sees the tool as key to winning back low-income customers with affordable prices.

There are risks, though. Wendy’s and Instacart both faced public backlash over algorithm-based pricing.

Some experts also warn about antitrust scrutiny, since McDonald’s own portal terms say franchisees “may be competitors.” Other experts say the legal risk is low.

Traffic is another concern. U.S. foot traffic has declined year over year every full month since March, according to Placer.ai.

MCD Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

For McDonald’s stock investors, the big question is whether AI pricing can bring customers back without upsetting them or franchisees.

Management is targeting operating margins in the low to mid-50% range by 2030.

Getting pricing right will be a big part of reaching that goal, and a key driver for McDonald’s stock from here.
