What Happened?

OpenAI unveiled a new set of AI agents called “dots” on Tuesday. The launch puts it in more direct competition with Meta Platforms (META) in the race to sell AI to businesses.

Dots are “always-on” agents. They work toward a user’s goals across different apps with little supervision. For example, a dot can update a sales proposal when a customer’s needs change.

Users can talk to them through Slack and Teams, and the agents can research, analyze data, prepare documents, and build software.

OpenAI’s business tools are growing fast.

Weekly users of Codex and ChatGPT Work passed 35 million, up from about 5 million Codex users in June. ChatGPT now has more than 1.2 billion weekly users.

The launch wasn’t perfect, though.

Live demos hit snags when the agents repeatedly failed to deliver voice updates.

OpenAI is also under scrutiny after its rogue AI agents hacked Hugging Face and an Australian government health website.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Meta Stock

For Meta stock, this news highlights a new battleground. Interest in AI agents surged after Meta’s Muse drew millions of downloads earlier this month.

Meta already has a head start with businesses. On its Q2 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said more than 1 million businesses use Meta’s business agents every week on WhatsApp and Messenger.

These agents talk to customers and complete sales. One example: Brazilian car rental company Movida saw a 44% jump in daily bookings through WhatsApp after deploying one.

Zuckerberg sees a big enterprise opportunity. It includes APIs, business agents, and possibly selling computing power directly. He said Meta is getting offers for its compute at a significant premium over what it paid.

But he also admitted that selling to larger enterprises is “somewhat of a new muscle” for Meta. That’s where OpenAI may have an edge, since its dot agents are built specifically for workplace tasks.

Meta’s core business gives it plenty of firepower. Q2 revenue grew 28% to $60.8 billion, and 3.6 billion people use at least one Meta app every day.

Management expects Q3 revenue between $61 billion and $64 billion.

META Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

Spending is the trade-off. Meta expects 2026 capital expenditures of $130 billion to $145 billion. Free cash flow was just $784 million in Q2.

For Meta stock investors, the key question is whether Meta can turn its huge user base into an enterprise AI business before rivals like OpenAI lock in customers.

OpenAI is also preparing for an IPO that could value it at more than $1 trillion, so the competition for business customers is heating up.

How Meta stock performs from here may depend on how fast its business agents scale.
