What Happened?

Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) trades at $334.68, below the $379.62 it fetched on June 9, the day its clearest agentic-AI monetization pitch first reached investors. In the weeks since, the company printed a stronger quarter, raised full-year guidance, and pushed backlog to a record. The thesis did not weaken. The price did, falling as far as the low $300s after an AI-disruption scare in July before closing up about 5% on August 25.

When Head of Investor Relations Richard Gu returned to the stage at the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference on August 26, the monetization story was familiar, but the number underneath it was new: a Q2 backlog whose quality Gu argued is being underrated. The question for a buyer here is whether a cheaper multiple on a confirmed thesis is an opening or a warning.

What Actually Changed Since June

As TIKR detailed after the June 9 Nasdaq conference, Cadence plans to price its “super agents” like the human designers they replace, worth “tens of thousands of dollars” each, aimed at the roughly 90% of a customer’s design budget that still goes to engineers rather than tools. That greenfield is still not in guidance.

Cadence grew revenue 24% year over year in the second quarter of 2026 and exited with a record $8.1 billion backlog. The figure Gu volunteered at Deutsche Bank has not circulated: a current remaining performance obligation coverage ratio of about 58%, which he said runs “much higher than the peer set.” That ratio measures how much backlog converts to revenue within twelve months, and it is why a business growing this fast can also claim visibility. Growth was broad, with core EDA up 18% to 19%, System Design and Analysis north of 35%, and IP north of 40%.

Why the Multiple Compressed

Shares fell after a reported open-weight model designed a working chip in about 48 hours, reviving the fear that AI would hollow out demand for design software. Gu’s rebuttal was that the agents call Cadence’s underlying tools more heavily, not less, echoing how its Cerebrus tool already drives roughly ten copies of its full digital flow per copy sold. Whether that reframing holds is the swing factor, because the stock now trades at about 39 times next-twelve-months earnings and roughly 29 times NTM EV/EBITDA, down from the mid-40s P/E it carried in June.

That premium still sits above the closest comparable name, Synopsys, near 25 times forward earnings, so a buyer is paying for the highest-quality position in a small field rather than for cheapness. The offset is a business Gu frames as clearing the “Rule of 60” this year, pairing roughly 19% growth with a non-GAAP operating margin near 44%, with earnings and margin growth he called “always a North Star for us.” China, the risk bears cite first, is guided to grow “at least at the company average this year.”

The mid case rests on two revenue drivers: mid-teens core EDA and IP growth carried by the AI design cycle, and the newer agentic and System Design and Analysis lines, the latter lifted by the Hexagon acquisition that pushed Cadence into multiphysics simulation. It assumes revenue compounding around 10% to 11% a year, below the ~19% Cadence guides to for 2026, so the baseline is conservative. The margin driver is continued operating leverage, with net income margin modeled toward the high 30s. The primary risk is the multiple: at 39 times forward earnings, any stumble in agent adoption or a China demand shock compresses the valuation faster than earnings can offset. The upside is a business compounding earnings in the mid-teens, while its agentic layer sells into a greenfield, the model doesn’t yet count. The downside is the multiple: at 39 times forward earnings, a stumble in agent adoption or a China demand shock resets the stock faster than earnings can catch up.

Conclusion

The catalyst is the same one TIKR flagged in June, still unmet: the first quarter management credits agent revenue in the income statement. Cadence reports third-quarter 2026 results in the fourth quarter. A guidance revision that core EDA demand alone cannot explain would confirm the monetization story the price stopped paying for; another “not in the guide” quarter would justify the discount. What is different from June is the entry point, roughly $45 lower on a thesis that got stronger.
