Why AXTI Stock Jumped 11% on Its S&P SmallCap 600 Addition

AXT (AXTI) stock jumped 11% to close at $64 on Thursday, September 16, after S&P Dow Jones Indices said it would add the company to the S&P SmallCap 600, replacing Matthews International. The change takes effect before the market opens on September 21.

AXT joins as an information technology constituent, taking the slot vacated by Matthews International, a consumer discretionary name. The same September 21 rebalance lifted Bloom Energy, Illumina, and Everpure into the S&P 500, part of the broader quarterly reshuffle S&P Dow Jones Indices runs each September, December, March, and June.

Index additions carry their own kind of gravity. Funds that track the SmallCap 600 have to hold every name in it, in roughly the weight the index assigns, which means AXTI stock now sits on buy lists it never qualified for a year ago. That mechanical demand doesn’t wait for the effective date either. Traders who know the flows tend to front-run them, which is a large part of why Thursday’s move happened five days ahead of the actual switch.

The index addition adds nothing new to AXT’s business. What it reflects is how big the company has already become.

How a Record Quarter Set Up AXT’s Index Addition

AXT makes indium phosphide substrates, the material at the center of the optical lasers and detectors that move data inside AI data centers. Its second quarter earnings call, reported July 30, is why AXTI stock was large enough to earn a SmallCap 600 spot in the first place. “We have reached an inflection point in our business where the customer demand is extremely strong for our indium phosphide material,” said Dr. Morris Young, AXT’s chief executive, on the July 30 earnings call. That demand is what shows up in the numbers.

Revenue hit a record $47.6 million, up 77% from the first quarter and up 164% from a year earlier, with indium phosphide alone contributing $30.7 million as hyperscalers pushed toward 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers. Non-GAAP gross margin jumped to 45%, and the company swung to an $11.9 million non-GAAP profit after a loss a year earlier. Backlog now tops $100 million, and new supply deals with Coherent, Casela, and Lumentum came with upfront cash prepayments attached. Management has also guided to more than double indium phosphide capacity again in 2027, aiming for a run rate near $130 million a quarter by year end. That’s the growth Thursday’s index nod is actually measuring.

AXTI Stock Still Trades 42% Below the Street’s $92 Target

The five analysts TIKR tracks on AXTI stock currently split 3 buys, 1 outperform, and 1 hold, with a mean target of $92. That sits 42% above Thursday’s closing price of $64.

That gap has been a moving target all year. Back on June 30, 2025, AXTI stock traded at $2 against a mean target of $4, the kind of spread you’d expect on a thinly covered micro cap. But the stock outran its coverage almost immediately.

By March 31, 2026, shares had rocketed to $57 while the mean target crawled to just $31, pushing the Target/Close ratio down to 54%, its low point for the stretch and proof analysts were badly behind the tape. Targets then nearly tripled to $97 by June 30 as coverage caught up to the earnings turn, and the ratio has held above 130% ever since. Analysts have spent over a year chasing this stock, and for most of that stretch, they lost.

TIKR’s Mid-Case Model Values AXT Stock at $355 by 2031

TIKR’s mid-case model values AXT stock at $355 by December 2031, implying 452% total return from the current price of $64, or 49% annualized over the next 5.3 years.

A projected annualized return near 49% is the kind of number usually reserved for a company still early in a growth curve, not one already trading at a market cap large enough for a SmallCap 600 seat.

That framing fits AXT stock today. The index addition confirms the market has noticed the reset the indium phosphide ramp already produced, and the Street’s $92 mean target, itself only months removed from sitting below the stock price, has kept climbing since analysts caught up in June.

TIKR’s model extends that same logic further out, betting the capacity AXT is bringing online for AI data center optics keeps outpacing what a five-analyst Street can price in one earnings cycle at a time. That capacity path, guided to nearly $130 million a quarter by the end of 2027, is why the model’s return window stretches out to 2031 instead of compressing into next year.
