What Happened?

AMD (AMD) stock fell on Monday after HSBC downgraded the chipmaker from Buy to Hold. The bank kept a positive long-term view but raised a straightforward concern: the stock has already priced in most of the good news.

  • HSBC bumped its price target slightly to $340, but that’s still below AMD’s price at the time of the downgrade, around $360.
  • The core issue is valuation. A year ago, AMD was trading at around 19 times its expected 2027 earnings. Now it trades at 33 times.
  • That kind of re-rating makes it hard to see much further upside, even if the business continues to perform well.
  • The firm also flagged capacity constraints as a reason earnings may not surprise to the upside.
  • In simple terms, AMD wants to grow, but getting chips made quickly enough remains a bottleneck.

That’s not exactly a new problem. On the Q4 2025 earnings call, CEO Lisa Su said the company has been working with supply chain partners to ramp server CPU capacity, and demand is clearly outpacing supply in some areas.

AMD stock had already priced in much of that growth, which is partly why HSBC thinks the easy money has been made.

There’s also a broader backdrop weighing on AMD stock right now.

A selloff across semiconductor names followed reports that OpenAI missed its user and revenue targets. When the biggest AI spender stumbles, chip stocks feel it.

What the Market Is Telling Us About AMD Stock

AMD stock is still up roughly 235% over the past year, which is a remarkable run. But that kind of move naturally invites questions about what’s already baked into the price.

The fundamentals are hard to argue with.

  • AMD posted record revenue of $34.6 billion in 2025, up 34% year over year.
  • Data center revenue hit $5.4 billion in Q4 alone.
  • The MI450 GPU ramp is on track for the second half of 2026, and AMD has a multiyear partnership with OpenAI covering 6 gigawatts of GPU deployments.
  • Long term, the company is targeting over 35% annual revenue growth and $20-plus in earnings per share.
AMD Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

Not every analyst agrees with HSBC’s cautious stance. Bernstein recently raised its price target on AMD stock, citing a 50% jump in EPYC server CPU sales expected for 2026 and a new deal with Meta AI.

For investors, AMD stock sits in an interesting spot: strong business momentum, but a valuation that leaves little room for error.
