What Happened?

Alcoa (AA) stock slipped after the aluminum producer reported mixed Q1 2026 results on April 16.

  • The company missed on both revenue and earnings.
  • Revenue came in at $3.19 billion against expectations of $3.3 billion.
  • Adjusted EPS landed at $1.40, just short of the $1.47 analysts had forecast.
  • That said, the underlying business showed real improvement. Net income nearly doubled from the prior quarter, jumping from $213 million to $425 million.
  • Adjusted EBITDA rose to $595 million, up from $527 million in Q4 2025.
  • The shortfall was largely driven by weakness in Alcoa’s alumina segment. Lower alumina prices and rising energy and freight costs — tied to disruptions from the Middle East conflict — pushed that segment to a negative $40 million EBITDA.
  • The aluminum segment was a different story. Higher metal prices lifted aluminum EBITDA by $174 million sequentially.

CEO William Oplinger highlighted the company’s ability to navigate the disruptions, noting that teams kept supply chains running through both the Middle East conflict and Cyclone Narelle in Western Australia.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Alcoa Stock

Alcoa stock edged down 3% in after-hours trading due to the misses, which suggests investors are worried, but they are not panicking. The market seems focused on the sequential improvement in profitability rather than the headline numbers.

Still, headwinds remain real. Alumina pricing is under pressure, energy costs are rising, and the conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt global supply chains.

Alcoa stock may stay volatile until there’s more clarity on how those dynamics play out in Q2 and beyond.
