What Happened?
Vistra (VST) shares jumped about 11% after the Energy Department announced a $4.2 billion nuclear investment. The money would go to Vistra’s nuclear plants in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
The DOE’s Office of Energy Dominance Financing issued a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion. It will fund upgrades at Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania, and Davis-Besse and Perry in Ohio.
The plans have two goals. They will preserve nearly 4 gigawatts of baseload power, enough for more than 3 million homes. They will also add 433 megawatts of new nuclear capacity.
The upgrades will increase output from existing plants.
They won’t need new transmission corridors. The plants are also set to run for 20 more years beyond their current licenses. The project supports about 3,000 jobs.

The loan has an option to cover future upgrades at Comanche Peak in Texas. There is a catch, though.
The loan is conditional. Vistra must meet technical, legal, environmental, and financial requirements before the DOE funds it.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Vistra Stock
For Vistra stock, the rally shows investors like cheap, government-backed financing for nuclear growth. More power from existing plants is a faster path than building new ones.
The business was already doing well. In Q2, adjusted EBITDA was $1.767 billion. That was up more than 30% from a year earlier.
Vistra stayed on track for 2026 guidance of $6.8 billion to $7.6 billion. It expects to land at or above the midpoint.
CEO Jim Burke said demand is strong. PJM and ERCOT both hit new summer peak records in July. He said the company is in active talks with large power customers.
Not everything is smooth. ERCOT forward prices have fallen. Management said 2027 results will likely trend toward the low end of its $7.4 billion to $7.8 billion range.
That range does not include the Cogentrix deal or the Meta contracts.

Vistra stock has also drawn attention for its buybacks.
The company has returned over $6.5 billion to shareholders since late 2021.
Investors in Vistra stock will want to watch whether the loan closes. An 11% jump leaves less room for disappointment.
