What Happened?

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) closed at $631.75 on October 5, down 0.34% on the day and nearly triple its 2025 year-end close, after Stifel analyst Ruben Roy raised his target to $700 from $635. His note expects a beat-and-raise third quarter led by EPYC server processors, following Bank of America’s server-driven move to $720 on September 24. Roy’s bigger point is that longer-term commentary, not the quarter, will draw the focus. AMD’s investor relations materials set the long-term targets that commentary will be measured against.

Stifel Puts the 2027 Outlook Ahead of the Quarter

Roy expects longer-term Helios commentary and World Labs details to draw far more attention than the results or the near-term outlook. He still called the fourth-quarter guide important. In his view, it is when MI450 revenue begins, gross margin faces roughly 100 basis points of pressure, and management may clarify its 2027 Data Center framework. The bar for a beat sits close to the guide: the 38-analyst third-quarter consensus of about $13.06 billion is just above AMD’s guidance of about $13 billion, plus or minus $300 million, with non-GAAP gross margin near 56%.

Roy framed the server limit as supply, not demand, naming ecosystem server-build capacity and DRAM as the primary constraint. Spending is also running ahead. Second-quarter free cash flow of $1,558 million missed the $1,883 million estimate by 17.26% as capital spending hit $808 million, more than double expectations. Operating cash flow of $2,366 million still beat by 14.02%.

Enterprise Buyers Are Widening AMD’s Server Base

At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on September 11, Matt Ramsay, AMD’s corporate vice president of financial strategy and investor relations, said the enterprise part of the server business grew more than 70% in the second quarter. He added that “the industry has not seen those type of growth rates in enterprise server basically ever.”

Dan McNamara, the senior vice president whose group includes AMD’s server CPUs, said AI is moving the opposite way from general-purpose computing, which started on-premises and went to the cloud. Mainstream enterprises are now looking at smaller AI deployments on-site, which he expects to spread AMD’s AI business beyond its current concentrated customer base.

AMD Raised Its EPS Goal. Consensus Clears the Old One by 2028

Ramsay also revisited the more-than-$20 EPS goal AMD set at its November 2025 analyst day: “I think we’ve updated that to be significantly more than $20.” Consensus normalized EPS reaches $15.72 in 2027 and $22.82 in 2028. At $631.75, the stock trades at about 28 times 2028 earnings, against an NTM P/E ratio near 57, so buyers are paying now for earnings about two years out.

On September 28, AMD agreed to buy World Labs for about $8.2 billion in stock, roughly 0.8% of its October 5 market value, with closing expected by year-end pending approvals. CEO Lisa Su said, “Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving.”

TIKR’s mid-case, a scenario rather than a forecast, values AMD at around $2,310 by December 31, 2030. That is a ~266% total return, or ~36% a year over 4.2 years from $631.75. Revenue growth leans on EPYC share gains and the MI450 ramp, including Anthropic’s first gigawatt of Helios deployments in the first half of 2027. The margin driver is operating leverage toward AMD’s analyst-day goal of a non-GAAP operating margin above 35%.

The primary risk is fourth-quarter margin pressure persisting while DRAM limits CPU supply. Upside comes if AMD’s 2027 Data Center framework supports the consensus EPS path. If margins slip and estimates stall, a ~57x multiple has no earnings cushion.

Conclusion

AMD’s third-quarter report, expected in early November, turns on one disclosure: whether management puts numbers on its 2027 Data Center framework. A fourth-quarter guide that keeps gross margin within about one point of the third quarter’s ~56%, paired with that framework, would match Stifel’s setup. A deeper margin cut with no 2027 detail would leave the premium resting on a goal rather than a guide.
