What Happened?

General Motors (GM) plans to bring hybrid models into its US lineup.

Mike Anderson, GM’s vice president of propulsion engineering, confirmed this in an interview with CNBC. He would not say when they will arrive. Hybrids were previously expected as soon as next year.

“It’s fair to say that [hybrids are] part of the plan,” Anderson said. He added that GM knows what customers want and wants to deliver it quickly.

GM has mostly stayed out of the hybrid market this decade. Instead, it chose to go “all-in” on all-electric vehicles.

Today it sells only one hybrid, a version of the Chevrolet Corvette. Anderson said the long-term goal is still an all-electric future.

But he said the road there will involve a mix of technologies.

Hybrid demand is rising. Cox Automotive says hybrid sales rose 23% in Q2 from a year earlier. They made up a record 16.3% of US sales from April through June. EVs were about 5.8%.

Rivals Ford and Stellantis have used suppliers to bring hybrids to market faster. Anderson said GM’s approach will mix in-house and outside technology.

What the Market Is Telling Us About General Motors Stock

This is a strategy update, not a financial result. It also comes with no dates.

General Motors stock may not move much on the news alone. But it shows GM is listening to what buyers want.

The core business is strong. In Q2, GM reported revenue of $48 billion. Adjusted EBIT was $3.9 billion. North America margin was 8.6%, back within its 8% to 10% target.

GM also raised its 2026 guidance for the second time this year. It now expects adjusted EBIT of $14 billion to $16 billion. Adjusted EPS is expected at $12 to $14.

EVs have been a drag. GM has booked $10.9 billion in EV-related charges since the second half of 2025. Management said these actions substantially complete the material cash charges.
