What Happened?

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) has hired Rob Sweeney as a global chair of investment banking. Sweeney comes from Goldman Sachs and Sycamore.

Reuters accessed an internal memo about the move on October 6, and here’s what it reported:

  • Sweeney will advise major corporate clients. He will focus on the consumer and retail sector. He will also work with senior bankers on key client relationships.
  • He will also help lead the bank’s security and resilience initiatives.

This is not a one-off hire. JPMorgan has brought in several senior bankers in recent months. Amy Lissauer joined as global head of shareholder activism.

Michael Flynn was named head of small-cap investment banking.

The bank has also hired more than 1,000 bankers globally this year, according to a source. It is growing its coverage teams across industries and regions.

What the Market Is Telling Us About JPMorgan Stock

For JPMorgan stock, the message is simple. The bank is spending to win more deals.

Dealmaking has been picking up after several quiet years. JPMorgan’s investment banking fees rose 30% in Q2. That was the highest level since 2021.

Net income came in at $16.9 billion, and EPS was $6.14.

More growth may be ahead. Co-President Doug Petno said in September that Q3 investment banking fees should rise by the mid-to-high teens. He pointed to a strong deal pipeline.

There is a cost, though. JPMorgan raised its 2026 expense outlook to about $107.5 billion.

Management said higher revenue-related costs drove most of that. Hiring also adds to expenses, and CEO Jamie Dimon said the company keeps investing through the cycle.

He also said conditions are “getting close to as good as it gets,” but added that no one knows how long it will last.
