What Happened?

Micron (MU) has agreed to settle a patent fight with Netlist, and the latter announced the deal on Tuesday.

Micron will pay $30 million per quarter for five years. That totals $600 million. In return, Micron gets a license to Netlist’s patent portfolio, including its “high bandwidth memory” technology.

The two companies have been in court for a while. In 2024, Netlist won a $445 million patent infringement verdict against Micron in a Texas federal court.

Then, in September, Netlist filed a new complaint at the US International Trade Commission. It asked for a ban on imports of Micron chips used in AI products from Google, Nvidia and Broadcom.

Netlist CEO C.K. Hong said the deal “further validates the value of our AI memory technologies.” Micron did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Netlist also settled a separate patent dispute with Samsung in August, after winning $421 million in verdicts against it.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Micron Stock

For Micron stock, the cost looks small. Micron made $33.2 billion in free cash flow in its latest quarter alone.

A $30 million quarterly payment is less than 0.1% of that. It also sits against $73.5 billion in cash and investments.

The bigger issue is risk. An import ban on chips used in AI products would have been a real problem.

Those chips are central to Micron’s growth. The sources provided do not say whether the new ITC complaint ends with this deal, so investors may want to watch for that detail.

The business itself is running hot. Micron’s latest quarter brought $54.2 billion in revenue and $33.42 in earnings per share.

Management expects about $61.5 billion in revenue next quarter. The company also says memory supply will stay tight through 2027 and 2028.

MU Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

That is why this settlement matters less for the cash and more for the clarity. Micron stock has been driven by AI demand and strong pricing.

Removing a legal overhang lets investors focus on that story. Still, Micron stock now carries a recurring cost for five years, and investors will want to hear management’s view on it.
