What Happened?
A mass consumer lawsuit against Google (GOOGL) began in London on Tuesday. The claim is worth over £1 billion.
It covers about 20 million people who bought apps, in-app items or subscriptions on the Play Store between 2015 and this July.
Consumer advocate Liz Coll is leading the case. Her lawyers say Google abused its dominant position.
They argue it charged commissions of up to 30%. They also say developers passed those costs on to consumers.
Google’s parent, Alphabet, is fighting the claim. A spokesperson said it ignores the choice Android gives users.
Google says it charges “some of the lowest fees in the market.” Its lawyers say the Play Store faces strong competition, including from Apple’s App Store.
The trial is at London’s Competition Appeal Tribunal. Similar cases have been brought against Apple and Sony over 30% commissions.

Google has settled other fights.
In March, it reached a worldwide deal with Epic Games. It said it would expand billing options and cut developer fees.
Last month, it settled a developer lawsuit for £260 million without admitting wrongdoing.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Alphabet Stock
For Google stock, this case looks small next to the size of the business. A £1 billion claim is about $1.33 billion. Alphabet’s operating income last quarter alone was $40.8 billion.
The business is growing fast. Revenue rose 24% to $119.8 billion in Q2. Cloud revenue jumped 82%. Cloud backlog hit $514 billion. Search and Other revenue grew 17%.
The Play Store sits inside the Subscriptions, Platforms and Devices unit. That unit brought in $12.9 billion, up 15%.
So the fee fight touches a real revenue line. Any change in commission rates could matter over time.
The bigger issue for Google stock is spending. Alphabet raised its 2026 capital spending guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion.
Free cash flow was negative $5.9 billion in the quarter. Management said it would stay under pressure.

So Google stock faces a mix of legal noise and heavy investment.
The legal risk looks manageable. Investors will likely focus more on whether AI spending keeps paying off. Google stock investors should still watch how the tribunal rules.
