What Happened?
SpaceX (SPCX) plans to raise $40 billion to buy Nvidia AI chips. The Financial Times reported the news on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the deal. The plan calls for about $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt.
Apollo would help place the debt with a wide range of investors. Pimco is among a small group of lenders in talks to provide financing.
The deal is expected to close in 2027.
SpaceX shares fell 2% in extended trading after the report, and Nvidia rose 0.5%.
SpaceX, Apollo and Nvidia did not respond to Reuters. Pimco declined to comment.

What the Market Is Telling Us About SpaceX Stock
For SpaceX stock, the small dip suggests investors did not see the deal as a shock. The company has been clear about its AI plans.
On the Q2 call, SpaceX said it ended the quarter with 1.4 gigawatts of compute. It expects to pass 2 gigawatts by year-end. Elon Musk said the company will build exclusively on Nvidia hardware.
The money is already moving fast. SpaceX spent about $18.4 billion on capital projects in Q2. Roughly $15.8 billion went to AI compute.
CFO Bret Johnsen said new compute spending has paid back in less than a year. He also said the company expects over $100 billion in annualized revenue by December.
That helps explain why lenders may be willing to back it. SpaceX stock also benefits from a strong balance sheet.
The company raised about $85.7 billion in its IPO and holds $100 billion in cash and securities.
Still, this is a lot of borrowing.
Morgan Stanley estimates AI infrastructure needs $1.5 trillion in outside financing by 2028.
Reuters notes that lenders are becoming more cautious. Investors in SpaceX stock will want to watch how the debt is priced and how fast the new chips turn into revenue.
