What Happened?

Tesla (TSLA) stock is getting attention soon after the company’s highly anticipated Cybercab launch event in Texas on Thursday.

Morgan Stanley reiterated an Equal Weight rating and a $400 price target, implying about 12% upside from current levels.

Analyst Andrew Percoco had laid out two ways Thursday’s event could go. If Tesla just unveils the Cybercab and puts only a small number of vehicles on the road, Morgan Stanley expects shares could sell off.

But if Tesla rolls out a broader fleet that meaningfully expands the robotaxi program, that could push Tesla stock higher.

The firm said it’s heading into the event with a “positive bias,” meaning they lean toward the more optimistic outcome.

One clue pointing that way: Morgan Stanley noted that recent Texas DMV data showed Tesla registered about 40 more Cybercabs.

Texas requires commercial operators of Level 4 or Level 5 automated vehicles to hold DMV authorization and keep an active vehicle on file. That registration bump could signal Tesla is gearing up for a bigger rollout than some expect.

For context, Tesla first launched its paid Robotaxi service using Model Ys in Austin back in June 2025, then expanded into other Texas markets from there. Thursday’s event is seen as a potential next step in scaling the program.

Outside of the robotaxi story, Tesla’s core EV business is showing mixed results.

Sales of China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles rose 3.6% year-over-year in August to 86,166 units. That’s the tenth straight month of growth, but it’s a big slowdown compared to July’s 38% jump.

European numbers were also a mixed bag in August: registrations jumped 279% in France and 104% in Denmark, while falling sharply in Norway, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, and Italy.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Tesla Stock

The market’s modest pre-market move in Tesla stock suggests investors are waiting to see actual results from Thursday’s event rather than getting ahead of themselves.

Morgan Stanley’s framing is pretty clear: this isn’t really about whether Tesla shows off the Cybercab; it’s about whether the company backs that up with real fleet expansion.

TSLA Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

Given how uneven Tesla’s China and Europe sales numbers were in August, the robotaxi story may be carrying extra weight right now as a growth narrative separate from traditional car sales.

Investors will be watching closely to see which scenario plays out once the event happens.
