What Happened?

Nvidia (NVDA) stock is in the spotlight today after the company confirmed it’s buying open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion.

This isn’t a total surprise, since The Information had reported talks were happening last week. But the official deal shows Nvidia pushing further up the AI stack, beyond just making chips.

CEO Jensen Huang wrote in a blog post that Hugging Face will “remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem.”

He said the plan is to scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure, and expand AI access for developers and institutions worldwide.

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue explained how the deal came together. He said his team approached Nvidia over the summer, realizing that open-source AI was at “a turning point” and needed more resources, scale, and visibility.

Delangue said Nvidia felt like “a perfect home,” and once talks started, things moved quickly.

This is a big deal for Nvidia stock investors to understand. It’s the company’s second-largest acquisition ever, trailing only the $20 billion Groq asset purchase from December 2025.

Before that, Nvidia’s biggest deal was the roughly $7 billion purchase of Israeli chipmaker Mellanox back in 2019.

So this Hugging Face deal ranks among the most significant moves the company has ever made.

Nvidia has become the world’s most valuable company thanks to massive demand for its graphics processing units, which power the generative AI boom.

Buying Hugging Face is a clear bet that Nvidia wants to be seen as more than a hardware company, it wants a stake in the software and community side of AI too.

There’s a notable backstory here.

Hugging Face was recently at the center of a hacking incident that raised cybersecurity concerns around fast-moving AI tools.

Delangue said the attack came down to engineering mistakes, and his team used an Nvidia version of a Chinese open model to help resolve it.

Huang addressed that relationship directly in his post, saying he was honored that Delangue came to him while considering Hugging Face’s next chapter, and that he believed Nvidia would be a great home for the company, its community, and the future of open models.
