Synopsys Had a Terrible Quarter a Year Ago. It Has Beaten Estimates Four Times in a Row Since.

Synopsys (SNPS) makes the software semiconductor engineers use to design chips. Along with Cadence, it operates as a duopoly at the foundation of the global chip supply chain.

No advanced processor gets built without passing through EDA software. Every NVIDIA GPU, every Apple chip, every custom AI accelerator runs through tools that these two companies built and maintain.

In January 2026, Synopsys completed a $35 billion acquisition of Ansys, a company that makes simulation software used across aerospace, automotive, industrial, and electronics engineering.

The combination creates a platform that takes a product from chip design through full physical system simulation. The stock is down 23.5% YTD because the market spent much of the year uncertain about what that acquisition means and whether the integration would hold together.

The beats and misses table tells the story of how the integration has actually played out.

In Q3 FY2025, Synopsys missed on revenue, EBITDA, and EPS. The stock fell 35.84% that day, one of the worst single-day moves in the company’s history. Since then, Synopsys has beaten adjusted EPS estimates by roughly 4%, 6%, 6%, and 6.4% across four consecutive quarters.

FCF has blown past estimates in each period. In Q3 FY2026, actual FCF came in 207% above analyst projections, with operating cash flow beating by 161%. The stock reaction on Q3 FY2026 earnings day was +13.39%, the first meaningful positive day since the miss a year prior.

CEO Sassine Ghazi said the company delivered an outstanding quarter, with revenue and EPS exceeding the high end of guidance, driven by broad-based strength led by EDA.

Full-year guidance was raised to $9.69 to $9.74 billion in revenue, with non-GAAP EPS of $15.04 to $15.10. EDA is expected to reach double-digit organic growth in Q4 and for the full fiscal year.

The Cash Generation Is About to Take a Step Up

Synopsys has generated between roughly $1.27 billion and $1.60 billion in annual free cash flow across the past five fiscal years. The FY2024 dip to $1.27 billion reflects transaction costs from the Ansys deal.

The FY2025 recovery to $1.35 billion shows the underlying engine holding while absorbing one of the largest acquisitions in software history.

What the chart cannot yet show is FY2026. Management raised full-year FCF guidance to approximately $2.6 billion, up $600 million from prior guidance, which would represent nearly double the FY2025 figure.

In Q3 alone, FCF was $746 million. Non-GAAP operating margin held at 41.5%, meaning cash conversion is intact even as revenue scales sharply.

During the quarter, Synopsys launched Multiphysics Fusion, integrating its EDA tools with Ansys simulation for thermal analysis in chip design.

Revenue contribution from the combined product is expected to be moderate in FY2026 and more substantial from FY2027 onward as customers move to production.

What Does the Valuation Model Say?

The TIKR valuation model applies roughly 11% annual revenue growth through FY2030, with net income margins expanding toward 32%, arriving at a mid-case target of around $622 per share, implying roughly 69% total return at an annualized IRR of around 14% per year.

The 11% revenue growth assumption is conservative relative to the 23.6% forward two-year consensus CAGR and the 42% reported in Q3. The model reflects post-integration normalization rather than the current step-change year.

The Street’s mean target of around $546 implies roughly 45% upside from current levels, reflecting how much of the selloff analysts view as an overreaction to integration concerns that are now largely resolved.

Should You Buy Synopsys Stock?

The bull case is that the Ansys integration is working ahead of schedule, and the combined platform creates a competitive position neither company could have built independently. EDA demand is growing with AI chip complexity.

Multiphysics Fusion represents a new revenue layer beginning to materialize in FY2027. At roughly 22 times forward earnings, with FCF set to nearly double this year, the stock is not expensive for a business with these characteristics.

The bear case centers on leverage and China. Net debt of $7.2 billion at 3.2 times EBITDA limits financial flexibility. China represents a meaningful share of EDA revenue and remains subject to export control risk, a topic management acknowledged without providing specific exposure.

GAAP earnings are heavily distorted by Ansys amortization, making reported profitability difficult to read clearly. Integration execution risk has diminished with each strong quarter but has not fully disappeared.

Synopsys is the other half of the EDA duopoly, and the Ansys deal gives it a broader engineering platform than any competitor currently offers.

Four consecutive beats after a crisis quarter, a near-doubling of FCF guidance, and a stock still trading 30% below its 52-week high make for a genuinely interesting setup. Investors willing to give the integration story time to play out will find the current price considerably more compelling than the January highs suggested.
