What Happened?

Synopsys (SNPS) spent a year being punished for one number, and last quarter that number turned. The high-margin Design IP business, whose year-over-year decline defined the bear case through the spring and summer, grew about 11% in fiscal Q3 to $474 million. The stock, at $393.84, still trades within about 8% of its 52-week low of $366 and is down roughly 11% in 2026, as if the reversal had not happened.

The business is answering the exact question that drove the selloff, and the market has until September 30 Investor Day, built to quantify the turn, to reprice around it.

The Number That Drove the Selloff Just Inflected

For most of 2026, the worry had a name: Design IP. The segment had been shrinking year over year, and because it carries some of the company’s richest margins, its weakness let investors discount the whole AI-design story. Q3 broke that pattern. IP grew roughly 11% year over year to $474 million, which the CFO called continued sequential growth, and management said the repositioning toward higher-value work is now showing up in the results. Part of that repositioning is a shift toward supplying interface IP to hyperscalers building custom AI chips under a license-plus-royalty model, which management has said it will detail at Investor Day.

Revenue reached $2.477 billion, up about 42% year over year and above the $2.44 billion consensus. Non-GAAP EPS of $3.91 beat the $3.67 estimate, and non-GAAP operating margin hit 41.6%. Management then raised full-year revenue guidance to $9.69 billion to $9.74 billion and lifted non-GAAP EPS guidance to $15.04 to $15.10. CEO Sassine Ghazi put the read plainly: “The key takeaway from Q3 is that the fundamentals across our portfolio are strengthening. EDA is accelerating. Design IP has returned to growth.”

Core EDA grew 8.5% against a 16% comparison a year earlier, and management guided that growth would reaccelerate to double digits in Q4 and for the full year, the exact metric skeptics had fixated on. Concrete wins backed the claim: AMD’s new Instinct MI455X GPU was built using Synopsys’ 3DIC Compiler for multi-die design, and the Q3 launch of Multiphysics Fusion, the first joint tool with Ansys, drew validation from NVIDIA, Cisco, MediaTek, and Samsung Foundry, who reported up to 10x faster design closure.

So Why Is the Stock Still Down Here

The quarter itself landed well: shares jumped more than 13% on the August 26 print. What followed undid it. Over the next several sessions, the stock gave the gain back, sliding through early September on insider-sale profit-taking and a broad selloff in high-valuation AI and tech names, closing at $393.84 on September 4. The retreat was about positioning and sentiment, not the results. The valuation now reflects that caution. Synopsys trades at 17.66x forward EV/EBITDA, a clear discount to fellow EDA-duopoly member Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) at 25.25x, while simulation peer Dassault Systèmes (DSY) sits at 10.72x. The market is pricing an integration discount while Synopsys absorbs Ansys and carries about $10 billion in total debt.

Baird upgraded Synopsys to Outperform with a $560 target, citing a return to double-digit organic growth. Mizuho kept its Outperform rating but trimmed its target to $550, while Morgan Stanley stayed at Equal Weight and cut to $500. The overall book still leans bullish: the recommendation breakdown reads 16 Buy, 4 Outperform, 4 Hold, 2 No Opinion, and 1 Underperform, with zero sells, and the mean target of $545 sits roughly 38% above the current price. One data point cuts against outright panic: Executive Chair Aart de Geus sold about $21 million in stock in late August and early September, but under a preset Rule 10b5-1 plan and paired with option exercises, which makes it scheduled rather than a signal.

Using TIKR’s mid-case scenario, the model values Synopsys at about $673 per share by its 10/31/30 realization date, an implied total return near 71%, or roughly 14% annualized over the 4.1-year horizon. The two revenue drivers are continued AI-driven demand for EDA and hardware-assisted verification, and the Ansys business scaling as Multiphysics Fusion reaches commercial contribution in 2027. The margin driver is operating leverage from Ansys cost synergies, which management says are running ahead of schedule, supporting a mid-case net income margin near 32%. The primary risk is multiple compression, since the model already assumes the P/E contracts through the forecast, so the return leans on earnings growth rather than a re-rating.

  • Upside: IP royalties and agentic-AI consumption push revenue growth above the mid-case 11% CAGR as margins climb toward the high-case path.
  • Downside: soft non-AI demand and lingering integration costs cap both earnings and the multiple.

The $545 Street mean and the ~$673 model mid-case reach the same verdict from opposite ends: the price undercounts a business whose feared segment just turned.

Conclusion

Watch September 30. With Design IP back to growth and EDA guided higher, the Investor Day is where management has promised the numbers behind IP royalties and agentic-AI monetization, and it is the event most likely to close or widen the gap between a turning business and a stock near 52-week lows. A concrete royalty growth rate above the mid-teens baseline for the standards-based IP business would hand the bulls their re-rating case; vague targets would confirm the caution Morgan Stanley is pricing at Equal Weight. The December 9 Q4 report then tests whether the promised double-digit EDA growth actually printed.
