What Happened?

Pinterest (PINS) closed at $19.26 on October 2, 2026. That is about 6% above the $18.17 average price it paid for more than $2 billion of its own stock through early August, according to its second-quarter results. The shares are down 25.6% in 2026. Remarks from CEO Bill Ready at the September 9 Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, available in Pinterest’s investor relations materials, show how commercial its AI traffic has become.

Pinterest’s AI Assistant Draws 80% Commercial Queries

Pinterest handles over 80 billion searches a month, and Ready said more than half are commercial. Queries to its new assistant, now available to virtually all U.S. users, skew further: Ready said that “with the assistant, it’s 80% commerciality.”

He framed the design as a bet on discovery rather than checkout: “The real promise of agentic and where consumers wanted the help the most was making the recommendation before they knew what to ask.”

Ready also said advertisers running upper- and lower-funnel objectives together now see 3x the conversion, up from 2x, though he did not specify the baseline. The larger prize is overseas. More than 80% of Pinterest’s users are international, yet they generate roughly 20% of monetization, and Ready gave no timeline at the conference for taking the assistant beyond the U.S.

A 9x Multiple Prices In the Overseas Reset

Pinterest trades at 8.85 times forward earnings, near Snap (SNAP) at 7.77 times. That is below Reddit (RDDT) at 17.30 times, Meta Platforms (META) at 22.64 times, and Alphabet (GOOGL) at 25.04 times, all on TIKR’s next-twelve-months P/E basis. A 12.4% forward free cash flow yield leaves room for further buybacks.

Elliott, already a 4.8% shareholder as of December, bought $1 billion of 1.75% convertible notes in March with an initial conversion price of approximately $22.72, about 18% above the October 2 close. The notes convert into stock only above that level. Pinterest used the proceeds for a $1 billion accelerated share repurchase.

The discount has reasons. Pinterest posted a Q2 2026 GAAP net loss of $47 million and guided Q3 revenue to $1.19 billion to $1.21 billion, or 13% to 15% growth after 18% in Q2. Ready flagged new EU limits on Asia-based cross-border sellers and a restructuring of international go-to-market.

CFO Julia Brau Donnelly leaves October 30, with Vikram Naidu named interim principal financial officer. She sold 29,548 shares at a weighted average of $18.6084 on September 24 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted May 7, before her August departure announcement. On October 2, Pinterest amended its severance and change-in-control plan for Level 21 employees to add pro-rated target bonuses; the filing discloses no transaction.

The TIKR model’s mid case puts Pinterest at around $39 by December 31, 2030, a total return near 104%, or about 18% a year over 4.2 years. The nearer test is the $29.05 Street mean, about 51% above the current price. As of September 30, ratings stood at 17 Buy, 2 Outperform, and 19 Hold, with no Underperform or Sell ratings listed.

Reaching the model’s figure requires turning U.S. commercial search and assistant queries into ad revenue, and pricing an international audience that monetizes at a fraction of the U.S. rate. Street consensus, from just five analysts, puts 2030 revenue near $7.1 billion, about 1.7 times 2025’s $4.22 billion.

The primary risk is the international reset running long. Upside comes if overseas monetization starts closing the 80/20 gap. In the downside, the multiple stays near 9 times and returns lean on buybacks rather than growth.

Conclusion

Third-quarter results are expected in early November, though Pinterest has not confirmed the date. Revenue above the $1.21 billion top of guidance, with adjusted EBITDA above $355 million, would show commercial intent outpacing the overseas reset. Revenue below $1.19 billion would bring the $18.17 average buyback price back into focus.
