What Happened?

Meta (META) stock dropped 2.4% on Thursday after the company confirmed it will cut roughly 10% of its global workforce — about 8,000 employees — starting May 20.

The social media giant is also scrapping plans to fill 6,000 open roles it had been hiring for. This isn’t Meta’s first round of cuts this year.

  • In January, around 1,000 employees in the Reality Labs unit were let go.
  • Another wave hit in March, affecting staff across Facebook, global operations, and sales.
  • The company has also started replacing third-party content moderators with AI tools.

The common thread? AI.

  • Meta is aggressively redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence, where it’s been playing catch-up with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
  • CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI the company’s top priority, and that focus is reshaping how Meta allocates both capital and headcount.

Meta stock also faces scrutiny over a new internal tracking tool called the Model Capability Initiative. It logs employee keystrokes and mouse clicks to help train AI agents — a move that drew attention this week after it was revealed to staff.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Meta Stock

Meta stock is essentially flat for the year, even after a strong Q4 where the company reported $59.9 billion in revenue and over 3.5 billion daily active users across its apps. The market isn’t panicking, but it’s watching closely.

Meta stock reports Q1 earnings on Wednesday alongside Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft. With $115–$135 billion in planned capital expenditure this year and operating income still expected to grow, investors will be looking for signs that the AI bet is paying off.
