What Happened?

DoorDash (DASH) stock is in the spotlight this week, though for a reason that has nothing to do with earnings or sales. U.S. lawmakers have sent DoorDash a letter requesting information and documents about the company’s use of Chinese-developed AI models.

The letter came from the chairmen of two House committees, the Homeland Security Committee and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, which are jointly investigating the national security risks tied to American companies using AI systems built in China.

The scrutiny traces back to a post from DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang on X, where he described how the company is routing some lower-level AI work to Kimi K2.6, a model developed by Chinese AI company Moonshot AI.

DoorDash’s own AI research lab also posted that Kimi K2.6, along with Anthropic’s Fable 5, outperformed other Anthropic models the company had used, including Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.8, while costing less to run.

DoorDash responded to the inquiry with a statement saying it “proudly supports American AI leadership” and is working to ensure AI benefits small businesses, not just large companies.

The company said it looks forward to engaging with the committees on how it uses AI safely, including both American-developed frontier models and open-weight models.

This isn’t an isolated incident. DoorDash joins Cursor and Airbnb as companies that have received similar letters as part of this broader investigation.

Lawmakers are increasingly concerned that U.S. companies are turning to Chinese open-weight AI models because they’re cheaper and more customizable than proprietary American alternatives, even as those cost advantages come with unresolved national security questions.

Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino has been particularly vocal about the risks, pointing to reports that a Chinese model can now match leading U.S. systems in certain cybersecurity tasks.

Moonshot AI’s newer model, Kimi K3, released earlier this month, reportedly closed much of the performance gap with top American models. That’s part of why lawmakers are pushing to understand how deeply companies like DoorDash rely on these tools.

It’s worth noting that using Chinese AI models isn’t currently illegal for private U.S. companies, even though some government agencies have banned tools like DeepSeek. Other tech executives, including leaders at Coinbase and AI startup Lindy, have publicly discussed using Chinese models to cut costs, so DoorDash isn’t alone in this practice industry-wide.

What the Market Is Telling Us About DoorDash Stock

This story isn’t about DoorDash’s business performance; it’s about a regulatory and political spotlight landing on a common industry practice.

Companies have been adopting Chinese open-weight AI models because they’re often cheaper and highly capable, but that tradeoff is now getting real government attention.

For DoorDash stock specifically, the near-term impact of a congressional information request is typically limited, since this is an inquiry rather than an enforcement action.

Still, it adds DoorDash to a growing list of companies facing questions about how they balance cost savings against national security concerns tied to AI sourcing.
