What Happened?

Tesla (TSLA) shares rose 2.0% in pre-open trading after Barclays upgraded the stock. The bank moved its rating to Overweight from Equalweight and also raised its price target to $450 from $370.

Barclays gave three reasons.

  • The first is the expected combination with SpaceX.
  • The second is an improving core auto business.
  • The third is early signs that Robotaxi is taking off.

Barclays said the market widely expects a Tesla and SpaceX deal. It thinks the deal should come at a premium to Tesla’s current share price, which adds extra upside to the case for Tesla stock.

Mizuho also raised its price target to $460 and kept its Outperform rating.

There was good operational news too. Community trackers logged about 1,250 Cybercab sightings at Austin’s Formula 1 race over the weekend.

Most were fully driverless, and Tesla’s Berlin factory also set a weekly record of 7,000 Model Y units.

The broader market was mixed. S&P 500 and Dow futures edged higher.

The Nasdaq was slightly lower as investors waited for big tech earnings and a Federal Reserve rate decision this week. Tesla stock outperformed that backdrop.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Tesla Stock

Investors seem to like the story right now. Two analyst target raises, merger talk, and fresh Robotaxi data all landed at once, which helped push Tesla stock higher in early trading.

The latest earnings call backs up part of the story. Tesla said demand is growing faster than production and ended the quarter with its highest auto backlog in four years.

Auto margins, excluding credits, rose from 16.3% to 18.1%.

Robotaxi is also scaling fast as cumulative unsupervised miles grew 8x in the quarter. Management said Robotaxi should become noticeable in revenue in Q2 of next year and expects it to gain significant momentum in the second half of 2027.

The merger is still not a sure thing, and Elon Musk said the special committees at both companies have not agreed on terms.

He also said a deal would need a vote of 50% of all Tesla shares and called that a high hurdle.

Spending is another risk as Tesla expects about $20 billion in capital expenditures this year.

It also said operating expenses will keep rising as it builds out new products. For Tesla stock, the question is whether Robotaxi and the merger can justify that spending.
