What Happened?

Microsoft (MSFT) said on Monday that it is offering buyouts to a large group of employees with a goal to balance heavy AI spending with tighter cost control.

The voluntary exit offer covers certain workers in the U.S., Canada, India, and the U.K., and eligible workers are at experience level 70 or below.

About 60,000 people qualify, according to a person familiar with the matter, which is roughly 27% of Microsoft’s 223,000 employees.

Workers must decide in early December, and those who accept will leave on Dec. 31.

The same source said Microsoft has no target number this time and some marketing, sales and engineering teams have chosen not to take part.

In April, Microsoft launched its first voluntary retirement program and more than 30% of eligible employees took it.

In July, the company also announced 4,800 layoffs.

The pressure comes from AI spending. Microsoft said capital spending for the September quarter should top $50 billion.

A year ago, capital spending and finance leases were $34.9 billion.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Microsoft Stock

Investors are watching how Microsoft pays for its AI build-out, and MSFT stock reflects a simple tradeoff. The company wants to grow fast in AI, but it also wants to protect its finances.

The business is growing. In its latest quarter, revenue was $90 billion, up 18%, while Azure grew 43%.

Management said customer demand still exceeds supply and expects Azure growth of about 45% next quarter.

Cash flow is holding up better than some rivals. Microsoft reported $19.6 billion in free cash flow, down 23% from a year ago.

Alphabet and Amazon both reported negative free cash flow in the same period.

Microsoft also said it is changing how it charges customers. It is adding usage-based pricing on top of per-seat fees, which could help pay for the spending over time.

There are risks. Large exits can disrupt teams, and costs rise as the company builds more data centers.

Anyone following Microsoft stock should keep an eye on how many employees accept the offer.
