What Happened?
The fight started when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay over the weekend, urging AI labs to “pace the frontier.”
His idea is to slow down how fast AI models get more powerful, giving safety teams more time to test them.
Amodei even suggested this could require government help or antitrust exemptions, since competing companies coordinating on release timing normally runs into legal trouble under the Sherman Antitrust Act.
Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Huang wasn’t having it. In an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, he called the idea of new laws or antitrust waivers “completely unnecessary.”
His view: safety is simply an engineering problem, not something that needs new government rules.
Companies already have plenty of regulations covering product safety, he said, and if a model isn’t ready, the fix is simple. Hold it back and keep testing.
The debate spilled into Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference, where Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Huang all shared their views on the same stage over two days.
Amodei stuck to his slowdown pitch.
Huang called it “a false choice,” arguing speed and safety aren’t opposites.
Altman took a middle ground, saying safety should come before new features, no exceptions.

Huang also dismissed fears that AI poses a near-term existential risk, saying the world isn’t “going to die in 2030” because enough responsible companies are building proper guardrails.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Nvidia Stock
This debate isn’t just talk. Any real slowdown in AI model development could directly affect demand for the chips that power those models, which makes it a real story for anyone watching Nvidia stock. And right now, that demand is enormous.
Nvidia just posted Q2 revenue of $96 billion, more than double what it made a year ago.
Data center revenue alone hit $89 billion, split between $49 billion from hyperscale cloud giants and $40 billion from other customers like enterprises and AI startups. Gross margin came in at 75%.
Looking ahead, Nvidia expects Q3 revenue of $108 billion and guided for roughly 70% revenue growth for fiscal 2028.
Margins are expected to dip slightly to the 71% to 72% range by Q4 before recovering, as the company deals with rising memory component costs.
With numbers like these, it’s easy to see why Huang has such a strong incentive to keep the AI buildout moving fast rather than slowing it down.
Nvidia also returned $26 billion to shareholders last quarter through buybacks and dividends, showing how much cash the AI boom is generating for the company.

For investors tracking Nvidia stock, Huang’s message is clear: the company wants speed, safety, and growth to move together, not apart.
Whether the rest of the industry follows Amodei’s slower path or Huang’s faster one may end up shaping how much longer this AI-driven run for Nvidia stock can continue.
