Key Takeaways

  • IonQ shares fell 15% in the past week, mostly on Oct. 14, when the company priced a $2 billion stock sale to Heights Capital Management.
  • The $40 price was about 15% above the prior close, but the buyer also got warrants for 100 million more shares at $69.46.
  • The $2 billion covers close to three years of the cash burn analysts expect, and the stock trades at its lowest forward sales multiple in five years.
  • IonQ looks like a buy for patient holders who can accept the dilution, and the third-quarter report in early November is the next test.

IonQ (IONQ) is down 15% in the past week (through Monday’s close). Most of the drop came on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when it priced a $2 billion stock sale. That came two days after it agreed to buy Elisity with stock.

What exactly happened

An entity managed by Heights Capital Management bought:

  • 20.5 million shares and pre-funded warrants for 29.5 million more, all at $40, about 15% above Tuesday’s close
  • Seven-year warrants for 100 million more shares at $69.46, double Tuesday’s close

Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi called it “a tremendous vote of confidence in the trailblazing innovation that has defined IonQ.”

Investors weren’t convinced: the stock fell 9.5% that day.

A 9.3% bounce on Thursday, with no IonQ news, was gone after Friday’s tech selloff over interest-rate worries. Other quantum stocks fell almost as far over the week, so the sector did plenty of the damage.

Two stock deals in one week

The share count is IonQ’s own problem, though. The 50 million shares sold now come with warrants for 100 million more, and Elisity could add about 36 million. All in, that’s close to half again the 397 million shares outstanding.

And the count was already climbing: diluted shares doubled from 2021 to 2025, to 280 million.

Plus: the cash buys runway. IonQ’s free cash flow burn more than doubled in 2025, to $300 million.

Analysts expect about $740 million of burn in 2027, so $2 billion covers close to three years at that pace. (If Heights ever exercises those warrants, IonQ collects nearly $7 billion more.)

Cheap, with more shares coming

Forward price/sales was already at a five-year low before this week, and it’s slipped below 20x since.

On Thursday, Rosenblatt cut its target to $70 from $100 (right at the warrant strike) and kept its Buy. Morgan Stanley went to $43, at Equal Weight.

The risk is more of the same: wider losses and more stock deals. In the 90 days to Oct. 14, analysts’ 2027 loss estimate grew to $3.40 a share from $2.36.

My take: at under 20x forward sales, with close to three years of losses funded, IonQ is a buy for patient holders who can live with a much bigger share count.

The test is the third-quarter report in early November, the first with SkyWater. Watch the $450 million to $460 million 2026 revenue outlook, and any revenue figure for Elisity.
