What Happened?

SK Hynix (SKHY) stock was about 4% higher on Wednesday in pre-market trading (in US market). Samsung also closed up 6% on Wednesday (in the South Korean market).

The move came after Reuters reported that both companies are upgrading their China factories to make more advanced memory chips.

The plans target NAND flash memory, and SK Hynix currently makes 192-layer chips at its Dalian plant in China.

It wants to move to 240 layers or more. More layers mean more storage in each chip and lower costs, while Samsung is aiming for 286 layers at its Xian plant.

SK Hynix said it has been installing equipment at Dalian in consultation with the US government, and Reuters could not confirm how many export licenses the US has granted.

The US has said it does not intend to approve upgrades or expansion at these plants.

There is also a competition problem.

  • China’s YMTC has taken 38.5% of China’s NAND market, up from 28% for all of 2025.
  • SK Hynix’s share dropped to 17% from 20%.
  • Samsung’s share fell to 33.5% from 36%.

Outside China, SK Hynix already sells NAND chips with up to 321 layers.

What the Market Is Telling Us About SK Hynix Stock

Investors liked the news. Newer chips could help SK Hynix defend its share in China. They could also help it meet strong AI demand.

SK Hynix stock also has strong business trends behind it. In Q2, revenue rose 257% from a year ago to KRW 79.3 trillion.

Operating margin hit 76%. Management said AI-driven memory demand is strong and supply is tight. It also said it has signed long-term supply deals with around 10 customers.

Still, there are risks. US rules limit what the company can do in China. Those rules have already cost it market share. Executives have also warned that geopolitical tensions hurt their China operations.
