Key Takeaways

  • Applied Materials stock is down 2%, extending a chip equipment selloff that began right after its new 2030 plan.
  • Applied targets about 54% non-GAAP gross margin by 2030, versus roughly 50% today, and services above $12 billion.
  • China supplied 28% of record Q3 revenue of $9.12 billion, and export rules can shift fast.
  • Q4 results on November 12 will test gross margin against the 50.4% guide.

Applied Materials (AMAT) stock is down 2% today, extending a chip equipment selloff that began right after its new 2030 plan. The targets are bold, yet shares keep sliding.

So investors are weighing how much the AI build-out can carry.

A 2030 plan meets a selloff

At its SEMICON West investor event, Applied set calendar 2030 goals:

  • About 54% non-GAAP gross margin, versus roughly 50% today.
  • Roughly 40% non-GAAP operating margin.
  • More than 2 points of wafer fab equipment share gain.

Wafer fab equipment, or WFE, is industry spending on chipmaking tools. Applied expects AI to push WFE growth faster through 2030 than over the past decade.

The stock has moved the other way…

Applied Materials (AMAT): share price, $, last 1 year (TIKR)

Shares peaked near $740 and now trade around $405, though they are still up 78.5% over the past year. So the market had priced in a lot before the plan arrived.

Services are the steady engine

The steadiest target sits in services. Applied expects service revenue to grow more than 20% this year and top $12 billion by 2030.

That business maintains and upgrades tools already in fabs, so it earns as long as installed equipment runs. Applied also opened a $5 billion EPIC Center with partners like TSMC, Intel and Samsung.

The services line has been compounding quietly…

Applied Materials (AMAT): segment revenue, Applied Global Services, $ billions, fiscal 2021–2025 (TIKR)

Applied Global Services generated $6.4 billion in fiscal 2025. So reaching $12 billion would nearly double it in five years.

China and margins decide it

Applied’s trailing gross margin sits at 49.4%, so 54% would put it level with ASML at 54.3%.

China is the other swing factor. It supplied 28% of record Q3 revenue of $9.12 billion, down from 35% a year earlier, and export rules can shift fast.

The valuation is no longer stretched…

Applied Materials (AMAT): forward (NTM) P/E, last 5 years (TIKR)

Applied trades at 23.0x forward earnings after the pullback. That is reasonable if margins climb, but it leaves no cushion for a China shock.

My take: the 2030 plan is credible because services and share gains do much of the work. But I’d want margin progress before paying up.

Q4 results on November 12 come first. Gross margin against the 50.4% guide is the first step toward 54%.
