What Happened?

Ford Motor (F) stock surged 13% last Wednesday — its biggest single-day jump in roughly six years — after Morgan Stanley published a note drawing attention to the company’s energy storage business.

The move wasn’t tied to new news.

  • Ford quietly released details on Monday about Ford Energy, its wholly owned energy subsidiary. But once Morgan Stanley highlighted what was in those details, investors took notice fast.
  • Here’s the setup. After writing down $19.5 billion on its EV programs in December, Ford pivoted. Rather than let factory space in Kentucky sit idle, the company decided to repurpose it for energy storage — specifically for large-scale batteries that power data centers, utilities, and industrial customers.

The technology behind it matters.

  • Ford is using LFP prismatic batteries — an iron-based chemistry that’s cheaper and more durable than traditional lithium-ion.
  • And critically, Ford licensed this technology directly from CATL, the world’s leading battery manufacturer.
  • Morgan Stanley called this relationship an “underappreciated strategic competitive advantage” and said it expects Ford to announce supply agreements with major commercial customers in the coming months.

Ford is investing $2 billion in the business and targeting at least 20 gigawatt-hours of annual capacity. First deliveries are expected in late 2027.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Ford Motor Stock

Ford Motor stock had been mostly a story about trucks, tariffs, and EV losses. This changes the narrative.

The energy storage market is growing fast, driven by AI data center buildout and demand for grid stability. Ford is entering at a moment when the market needs reliable, affordable battery solutions — and it’s doing so with CATL’s technology and its own manufacturing scale.

CEO Jim Farley has been direct: Ford doesn’t want to be a contract battery maker. The plan is to own the customer relationship end-to-end, similar to how Ford Pro operates in the commercial vehicle segment.

F Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

Ford Motor stock still carries risks — the EV segment continues to bleed money, and energy storage is unproven territory for an automaker.

But Wednesday’s reaction suggests the market is starting to assign real value to what was previously being ignored.
