What Happened?

Ford Motor (F) beat third-quarter profit estimates on Oct. 28 and raised the low end of its 2026 profit guidance. The stock rose 3.43% to $12.36 the next session and closed at $12.25 on Oct. 30. Morgan Stanley and RBC Capital Markets cut their price targets on Oct. 29, and Goldman Sachs now sits at $12, down from $14 earlier in October. The earnings call explains the split: management guided 2027 profit roughly flat and pointed to 2028 for the next real step up.

Smaller EV Losses and Ford Credit Drove the Beat

Total revenue fell 2% to $49.5 billion, while adjusted EBIT rose 3% to $2.7 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.49 topped the $0.40 Street estimate by about 21%. The $72 million EBIT gain came mainly from a smaller EV loss and higher Ford Credit earnings. Ford Blue’s EBIT fell 10% to $1.4 billion, and Ford Pro’s fell 16% to $1.7 billion on commodity costs and launch expenses at its Oakville, Ontario, Super Duty plant.

Cash was the stronger answer. TIKR’s preview flagged free cash flow as the number that had to hold after a first half of just $220 million. Ford then produced $4.7 billion of adjusted free cash flow in the quarter, lifting its nine-month total to $4.9 billion against an unchanged $6 billion to $7 billion full-year guide. It raised the floor of its adjusted EBIT range to $10.5 billion from $10 billion but kept the $11 billion top, as 2026 commodity headwinds now approach $2.5 billion.

A Flat 2027 Is Why the Targets Fell

CEO Jim Farley said Ford is “targeting profitability next year to be roughly in line with this year,” despite “commodities, memory and logistics costs” he put at about $2 billion of year-over-year pressure. Ford plans to offset that through revenue optimization and cost efficiency, and it will spend about two-thirds of Ford Energy’s roughly $2 billion investment in 2027. RBC called Ford a 2028 and 2029 story as it cut its target to $14 from $15. Morgan Stanley moved to $13 from $14, and Goldman’s $12 sits just below the stock price. JPMorgan had warned before the report that the first look at 2027 would sound cautious.

Management Points to 2028 for the Payoff

CFO Sherry House said EV-unit expenses rise in 2027 and placed “the next step-function change in profitability” in the first half of 2028, as the new EV platform and Ford Energy both ramp up revenue. Farley said executed contracts and late-stage negotiations cover more than 80% of Ford Energy’s 2028 battery storage capacity, with full commitment expected by the first quarter of 2027. Ford won’t disclose a backlog until 2027, so that figure mixes signed deals with ones still in negotiation. For the Fathom, the sub-$30,000 electric pickup due in late 2027, COO Kumar Galhotra said 90% of validation testing is done, with supplier readiness the main remaining risk.

Farley also told employees Ford aims to sell 5 million vehicles a year by 2032, about 20% above current volume, according to The Wall Street Journal. At 6.82 times forward earnings with a 4.9% dividend yield, the market is paying little for any of it.

Ford Advanced Valuation Model (TIKR)

The TIKR model’s mid case, a scenario rather than a forecast, points to around $20 by Dec. 31, 2030. That’s a total return of roughly 61%, or about 12% a year, from $12.25. Its modest inputs, about 2% annual revenue growth and roughly 5% net margins over the model card’s 2025 to 2035 forecast, suit a company guiding to a flat year. The revenue drivers are Fathom volume from late 2027 and Ford Energy deliveries from 2028. The margin driver is the roughly $1 billion in warranty and material savings, excluding Novelis and tariffs, that Ford expects in 2026. The main risk is 2027 headwinds outrunning those offsets. Upside comes if Ford Energy’s 2028 capacity sells out as planned; downside comes if the Fathom slips, pushing the 2028 step-up out a year.

Conclusion

The test arrives in the first quarter of 2027, when Ford expects Ford Energy’s 2028 capacity to be fully committed and Fathom preorders to open. Full commitment would turn the 80% figure into signed demand. A slip on either would leave a flat 2027 with nothing behind it, and the trimmed targets would look right.
