What Happened?
D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) stock climbed 7% after the U.S. Commerce Department finalized CHIPS Act funding for the company.
D-Wave secured $100 million, and in exchange, the government takes a minority, non-controlling equity stake in the company. Rigetti Computing landed a matching $100 million deal on the same terms, and its stock jumped 6% on the news too.
This funding builds on letters of intent the Commerce Department first announced back in May, when it outlined $2.013 billion spread across nine quantum computing companies.
D-Wave’s award supports its long-term hardware roadmap, which includes scaling its annealing quantum computers to 20,000 qubits by 2029 and eventually 100,000 qubits by 2031.
Interestingly, the broader quantum computing sector isn’t rallying alongside D-Wave Quantum stock and Rigetti today.
The Defiance Quantum ETF is up just 1%, while the S&P 500 is roughly flat. That suggests this is a story specific to the two companies that received funding, not a sector-wide wave of optimism.

These deals come with a real trade-off.
Government funding gives D-Wave more runway to keep developing its technology, but the equity stake also means existing shareholders face dilution down the road.
That’s likely one reason the broader quantum ETF isn’t following D-Wave Quantum stock and Rigetti higher, even as those two names jump.

What the Market Is Telling Us About D-Wave Quantum Stock
Despite today’s gain, D-Wave Quantum stock is still down 37% year to date, showing how much ground it lost earlier this year before today’s bounce.
Rigetti is in a similar spot, down 26% year to date despite its own pop today. In other words, today’s move only claws back a small piece of what’s been a rough year for both stocks.
D-Wave heads into this news with a solid cash position, holding about $546 million as of the end of Q2 2026.
That gives the company some breathing room as it works through its technology roadmap, even before factoring in the new government funding.

Going forward, investors will want to watch for details on the specific milestones tied to D-Wave’s $100 million award, since that will show how quickly the funding actually turns into real hardware progress toward the company’s 20,000-qubit target.
Given how volatile quantum computing stocks have been this year, position sizing still matters.
Government backing is a vote of confidence in the technology, but it comes with real dilution risk, and D-Wave Quantum stock will likely keep swinging on both fronts as the story develops.
