What Happened?
Chipotle (CMG) just opened its first restaurant in Asia, and South Korean diners are showing up in a big way.
The company launched in Seoul’s Gangnam neighborhood in early September, and some customers waited up to three hours for a bowl.
Chipotle Mexican Grill stock investors are watching closely, since the wait times became such a talking point that they turned into a running joke on Korean social media. One user even joked a flight to the U.S. might be faster than the line.
Social media users have also started posting how-to guides explaining Chipotle’s build-your-own ordering system to first-time customers.
This launch marks Chipotle’s first-ever joint venture structure for entering a new market.
The company partnered with South Korean food company Sangmidang Holdings, which previously helped bring Shake Shack to the country.
The joint venture, called S&C Restaurants Holdings, is majority owned by Big Bite Company, an affiliate of Sangmidang, at 51%, with Chipotle holding the remaining 49%.
Nate Lawton, Chipotle’s chief business development officer, called this an important step in the company’s global growth strategy.
He said Sangmidang brings local market knowledge, operating infrastructure, and experience scaling restaurant brands across Asia.
Chipotle already operates in Canada and Europe, and it’s expanding through partnerships in the Middle East and Mexico too.
But Lawton was clear that Korea’s success won’t be measured by one restaurant’s performance. The real test is whether Chipotle can build a model that scales across the region.

South Korea looks like fertile ground for this.
According to market research firm Mintel, 42% of South Korean consumers had eaten Mexican food in the past three months, and another 37% said they hadn’t but were interested in trying it.
An analyst at Mintel noted that South Korea and Singapore, Chipotle’s next planned stop, both attract well-traveled consumers open to international food brands.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Chipotle Mexican Grill Stock
Chipotle won’t have this market to itself.
South Korea already has a Mexican-inspired chain called Cuchara, and Singapore has established players like Guzman y Gomez and Stuff’d.
To make this work locally, Chipotle and its Korean partner had to build a supply chain that meets the company’s global food quality standards, tapping vetted suppliers and farms along with existing sourcing infrastructure.
Looking ahead, Chipotle is already planning its next move in Asia.
Its joint venture partner is targeting the first half of 2027 for a Singapore launch, though exact timing and location are still being worked out.
Lawton described Singapore as a natural next step given how international the market is, though rising rental, labor, and energy costs there could pressure margins for restaurant operators.

For Chipotle Mexican Grill stock, this Seoul opening is an early but encouraging signal that the brand’s appeal can translate well beyond North America.
The company hasn’t named which Asian markets might follow Singapore, saying its focus right now is executing well in the markets it has already committed to.
