Key Takeaways

  • Broadcom agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion, while Bloomberg reports that its Wall Street syndicate is assembling $60 billion in AI chip financing for Anthropic and other companies, including a $42 billion senior-secured tranche.
  • Quarterly free cash flow reached a record $13.67 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, nearly double the $7.02 billion of a year earlier.
  • The $42 billion facility is slightly larger than the $39.41 billion of free cash flow Broadcom produced over the last four quarters, by this calculation.

Broadcom Stock Now Funds the Customer It Sells To

On September 8, Hock Tan told a Goldman Sachs audience that Broadcom does “not finance directly” and that its arrangement with AI labs “is not circular financing.” On October 1, Reuters reported that Anthropic’s IPO filing identified Broadcom (AVGO) as having agreed to provide up to $42 billion in financing, potentially through a designated financing partner, with debt instruments convertible into Anthropic shares. Broadcom had already disclosed the conditional convertible-note arrangement in its fiscal Q3 filing; no notes had been issued to it as of August 2. Bloomberg then reported Broadcom had started amassing $60 billion to fund chips for Anthropic.

The customer is not a small one. Tan said on the fiscal Q3 call that Anthropic is on track to become Broadcom’s largest XPU customer in 2027. It is also unprofitable, posting a $42 billion net loss in 2025, though roughly $34 billion came from a noncash accounting charge related to convertible financial instruments, per Reuters.

Cash is what makes the bet possible. Free cash flow climbed from $5.48 billion in the quarter ended November 2024 to $13.67 billion in the quarter ended August 2026. The last four quarters total $39.41 billion.

Strong Cash Flow Makes the Anthropic Bet Affordable, Not Safe

The exposure is already real. Broadcom’s first $35 billion XPV tranche carries a maximum potential backstop liability of about $29 billion once all AI racks are deployed. That equals roughly two quarters of fiscal Q3 free cash flow.

The judgment is that Broadcom can carry this, but the risk is concentration rather than liquidity. Its largest future customer and one of its largest contingent liabilities are the same company, and Anthropic’s own filing flags “potential conflicts of interest” in the relationship.

The next test arrives with fiscal Q4 results, currently estimated for December 9, around the time of Broadcom’s annual capital allocation review. Free cash flow holding above $13.67 billion, alongside clear disclosure of any new guarantees, would support the strategy. Rising exposure without matching cash growth would weaken it.

Fiscal Q4 results on December 9 will show whether cash keeps pace with new guarantees. Build an AVGO watchlist on TIKR for free →
