What Happened?

Vicor (VICR) stock jumped about 18% on Thursday after the company announced a new licensing deal tied to the booming AI infrastructure market.

Vicor granted an unnamed OEM a non-exclusive license to its patented Vertical Power Delivery, or VPD, technology.

The deal lets that customer buy VPD modules covered by Vicor’s patents from other suppliers, not just Vicor itself, giving chipmakers and cloud providers more flexibility in sourcing parts for AI and networking processors.

VPD technology solves what Vicor calls the “last inch” problem in chip power design, delivering high current from a low-voltage source right up to demanding compute chips.

It’s protected by patents and backed by roughly a decade of research.

Under the new arrangement, customers can buy from other licensed suppliers or from Vicor directly, and buyers who source key AI components from Vicor may get sizable discounts on royalty fees.

This news comes just days after Vicor announced a major manufacturing expansion. The company is buying a 334,000-square-foot building on 66 acres in Merrimack, New Hampshire, plus 54 more acres in Hooksett, to build new Fab-2 and Fab-3 facilities.

Together, these will add nearly a million square feet of capacity, which matters since Vicor’s existing Andover fab is nearing full utilization.

Demand has clearly been building. On the company’s most recent earnings call, CFO Jim Schmidt noted that backlog reached $379.7 million, up 26% from the prior quarter.

CEO Patrizio Vinciarelli also described strong interest in Vicor’s next-generation VPD technology, saying multiple companies have approached the company for access to its current-density capabilities, which he said are well ahead of competing solutions.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Vicor Stock

The market is treating this licensing deal as validation of Vicor’s strategy: pairing product sales with patent royalties to build what the company hopes is a near-monopoly in vertical power delivery for AI chips.

Vicor’s own executives have said they expect more companies across the industry to eventually need licenses as high-performance compute shifts toward VPD technology.

That said, Vicor cautioned that supplier agreements don’t fully shield companies from legal risk, since some deals only cover fees or damages rather than blocking an import ban entirely.

Retail sentiment on Stocktwits stayed bullish following the news, with some users speculating about the identity of the unnamed customer.

Vicor hasn’t confirmed who it is. For now, the size of today’s rally suggests investors see this deal as a meaningful step in Vicor stock’s broader AI infrastructure story.
