Why Twist Bioscience Stock Jumped 16% on Leerink’s Anthropic Call

Twist Bioscience (TWST) stock jumped 16% on Thursday, September 24, closing at $184 after Leerink Partners lifted its price target on the stock to $160 from $120 and reiterated the biology-and-AI thesis it had introduced two days earlier. Leerink called Twist Bioscience “the single most important beneficiary” of Anthropic’s expanding push into biology research, and Thursday’s target hike is what finally moved the stock.

The mechanism behind the call is specific. Leerink noted that Anthropic is funding laboratory testing of 5,000 protein designs using Twist Bioscience’s synthetic DNA, and that Claude analyzed the resulting lab data in 19 to 23 minutes, fast enough to let researchers queue the next experiment almost immediately. Twist Bioscience CEO Emily Leproust described the underlying pattern on the company’s August 3 earnings call, when she said AI “is doing exactly what we thought it would do. It just creates more sequences.” Every AI-designed protein candidate still needs a physical DNA sequence built and validated in a lab, and Twist Bioscience is one of the few manufacturers that can absorb that volume at scale.

The company’s own numbers back up the framing. Third-quarter revenue grew 23% year over year to $118.4 million, the 14th straight quarter of sequential growth, and management raised fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $456 million to $457 million while guiding to a second straight year of triple-digit percentage order growth in AI-enabled drug discovery.

None of this happened on a rising tide. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.37% that session, the S&P 500 slipped 0.05%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.09% as Middle East tensions pushed oil prices and Treasury yields higher ahead of a closely watched US-China summit. Twist Bioscience stock moved against that backdrop, not with it, and that is the clearest sign Thursday’s rally was about the company, not the market.

Thursday’s 16% move re-rates Twist Bioscience stock away from plain DNA synthesis and toward its role as the toll booth every AI drug discovery lab has to pass through.

The Eli Lilly Deal That Set Up Twist Bioscience Stock’s Rally

Leerink’s note built on ground Twist Bioscience had already broken. About a week earlier, the company signed an agreement to feed antibody characterization and wet-lab data directly into Eli Lilly’s AI-driven TuneLab drug discovery platform, with Twist Bioscience running the physical lab work while Lilly’s models search for better antibody candidates. That deal moved the stock on its own when it was announced, and it gave Leerink’s Thursday call something concrete to point to: two of the most closely watched names in AI, Anthropic and Eli Lilly, both routing real lab validation work through Twist Bioscience within the same two-week stretch. Coverage of the Lilly partnership framed it as evidence Twist Bioscience had moved from a niche DNA vendor to infrastructure multiple AI drug discovery programs now depend on.

Leerink now calls Twist Bioscience the biggest beneficiary of Anthropic’s biology push, layered on top of its new Eli Lilly deal. See what’s driving TWST stock on TIKR for free →

Twist Bioscience Stock Has Outrun Every Street Price Target

Twist Bioscience stock now trades well above where its own covering analysts see it. TIKR’s Street Targets table shows 7 buys, 2 outperforms, 3 holds and, for the first time in this stretch, 1 sell among the 13 analysts it tracks. The mean target sits at $110, 40% below Thursday’s $184 close, and even Leerink’s freshly lifted $160 high estimate trails the stock by 13%.

That gap did not open overnight. As of March 2026, the mean target still sat 6% above the stock’s price, a normal posture for a name the Street liked but the market hadn’t yet chased. By June 2026, the stock had pulled ahead and the mean target sat 28% below the close. The gap has since widened again, and coverage has grown only modestly over that stretch, from 9 analysts issuing price targets in March to 12 today. Wall Street is still writing notes about Twist Bioscience. It just isn’t writing them fast enough to keep pace with the stock.
