What Happened?

Tesla (TSLA) opened its first factory built for high-volume Semi production on Thursday. The plant is in Sparks, Nevada, near Reno.

The goal is big. Tesla plans to build 50,000 Semi trucks a year there. That works out to about 1,000 trucks per week. The ramp is expected to bring more than 3,000 jobs to Nevada.

Elon Musk wasn’t at the event. He was attending a state dinner in Washington, D.C. In a video message, he called the Semi “almost like a sports car in truck form.”

Tesla first showed the Semi in 2017. It started selling small numbers to early customers like PepsiCo in 2022. Now demand is picking up.

This week, industry group ZET SCALE picked Tesla as its main supplier for an initial order of 2,500 Semi trucks. Trucking firm Einride also agreed to buy 500.

Tesla doesn’t list a price, but high-end long-range models have sold for around $290,000, according to the ICCT.

The long-range Semi can travel about 500 miles on a full charge.

The standard version gets about 325 miles.

Tesla says trucks in real fleet use have been available 98% of the time, with few surprise repairs.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Tesla Stock

The Semi gives Tesla stock a new growth story at a useful time. Rising diesel costs could push more trucking companies toward electric models.

Tesla needs that boost. Tesla stock is down 14% this year, trailing all of its megacap tech peers.

Competition in electric cars is heating up worldwide, and the Cybertruck hasn’t gained much traction.

Self-driving is the next big piece.

On the July earnings call, Musk said there aren’t enough people who want to drive trucks.

He expects self-driving to work on the Semi around the end of this year or early next year.

But Musk has a long record of missing autonomy deadlines.

Rivals Aurora and Kodiak AI are already running driverless trucks for partners.

Spending is another thing to watch. Tesla expects capital spending of more than $25 billion this year, and free cash flow turned negative in Q2.

Still, the car business is showing strength. Tesla posted record Q2 deliveries and ended the quarter with its largest order backlog since 2023.

For Tesla stock investors, the Nevada plant is a real step forward.

The key question is how fast Tesla can ramp production. Hitting 1,000 trucks a week would make the Semi a meaningful business and could give Tesla stock a fresh reason to recover.
