What Happened?
A contractor linked to Super Micro Computer (SMCI) has pleaded guilty in an illegal chip export case.
Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun entered the plea on Thursday in federal court in Manhattan.
Sun pleaded guilty to four counts. They include conspiring to violate U.S. export controls, smuggling goods, defrauding the country, and obstructing justice.
The case involves servers with advanced Nvidia AI chips sent to China. In March, prosecutors charged Sun and two others tied to Super Micro. One is a co-founder.
They are accused of diverting about $2.5 billion of U.S. AI technology to China.
The indictment says the scheme began around October 2023. It describes Sun as a broker and “fixer.” He helped stage “dummy” servers in December 2025.
He also made false statements to a U.S. Department of Commerce officer. By then, the real servers had already been sent to China.

Super Micro was not named as a defendant.
The company says the case had no impact on its business operations. It fired Sun and cut ties with the other defendants earlier this year.
