What Happened?

Lumentum Holdings (LITE) rose 11.04% on September 8 to close at $978.54, one of its sharpest single sessions since August. There was no earnings print, no acquisition, and no new product behind it. Two Wall Street firms had just opened coverage with Buy-equivalent ratings, and the market spent the day pricing in that endorsement alongside a broad rally across AI-optical networking stocks.

The stock is now up roughly 108% in 2026, back near $1,000 after touching a record above that level in May. The company did report a $92.96 GAAP loss per share last fiscal year, but that was a one-time, non-cash charge from equitizing its convertible notes, not an operating problem: the same quarter posted a 27.8% GAAP operating margin. The enthusiasm rests on operations, which is where the scrutiny belongs.

The Initiations That Pushed a Doubled Stock Even Higher

Deutsche Bank’s Gianmarco Conti started Lumentum at Buy with a $1,200 target on August 31, arguing the company wins under every architecture, whether pluggable transceivers persist or co-packaged optics take over. Evercore ISI’s Amit Daryanani opened at Outperform with a $1,100 target the same week, telling clients that Lumentum’s diversity of growth means not all things need to go right for the stock to work. Neither rating was the only fuel: shares also climbed with a sector-wide bid in AI-optical networking names that day.

Conti’s conviction is notable because he stress-tested it with Lumentum’s CEO directly at Deutsche Bank’s technology conference on August 27. Michael Hurlston, Lumentum’s CEO, described a “copper wall” where signal speed outruns copper: at 1.6 terabits, copper carries a reliable signal maybe two to three meters, and countless links inside an AI rack run longer than that. “I don’t see a scenario in which this stalls out,” Hurlston said, framing the shift to optical as physics rather than preference.

What the Order Book Is Actually Telling Management

The concrete driver behind the bullish notes is the order rate. Hurlston said the company’s largest customer “has taken up their orders very significantly” since the last earnings call, a “huge uptick” that gave management confidence to raise its 2028 outlook. The clearest signal is optical circuit switches, or OCS, where shipments doubled sequentially and are set to cross $100 million in revenue next quarter. That line is what lifted management’s longer-term earnings marker to roughly $40 per share in fiscal 2028.

On its Cloud Light module unit, Hurlston said the engineering problem is fixed but “we’ve yet to fix the gross margin,” admitting Lumentum does not yet match the top module makers on profitability. That honesty cuts against the idea that everything is already working, and it is the one soft spot bulls have to underwrite.

On next-twelve-month P/E, it sits near 45x, against Cisco around 21x, Ciena near 33x, and Arista near 42x, per TIKR. That premium holds only while growth outruns the group, which it has: revenue rose 109% year over year last quarter, a multiple of what those mature peers posted. The risk is symmetrical. One soft quarter, or any slip in the co-packaged optics timeline analysts have flagged, and a 45x multiple compresses quickly.

TIKR’s mid-case scenario points to a target near $4,400 by mid-2032, well above the Street’s 12-month band because it answers a longer question than Deutsche Bank’s $1,200 or the $1,148 analyst mean. It leans on two revenue drivers: the scale-up build-out inside AI racks, where OCS and co-packaged optics barely register in today’s revenue, and the scale-across business connecting data centers, which Hurlston called the “least appreciated” high-margin line. The scenario assumes a revenue CAGR around 44% and a net margin near 38%, with a mix shift toward high-value lasers lifting margins. The upside is a supply-constrained supplier early in its biggest product cycles; the downside is customer concentration and timing, since much of the thesis rests on NVIDIA and a few hyperscalers deploying on schedule.

Conclusion

The next real test is fiscal Q1 2027, guided to $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion in revenue, a sequential jump of more than 20% off a record quarter, with the report due in early November. A print at or above the high end, with the OCS order book still climbing, tells you the two new Buy ratings were early rather than late. A revenue miss, or any softening in that order rate, Hurlston called a “huge uptick,” hands the multiple straight back to the bears. At 45 times forward earnings, Lumentum has priced in a lot.
