What Happened?

IBM (IBM) stock had a rough day on Wednesday, falling more than 7%. The drop was big enough to weigh on the Dow Industrials. The tech stock also fell another 4% in after-hours trading.

The selling wasn’t really about IBM itself. Quantum computing stocks pulled back across the board as traders booked profits after a strong run the day before. Rigetti dropped 10%, D-Wave fell 7%, and IonQ slipped 4%.

IBM got caught in the same wave, partly because it recently announced plans to spend more than $10 billion on quantum computing over the next five years.

The wider market didn’t help either. Oil prices climbed, Treasury yields rose, and investors started betting that interest rates could stay high for longer. That matters for IBM.

Its customers are large companies, and higher rates make them more careful about spending.

There were other warning signs, too. ADP reported 122,000 new jobs in May, beating the 110,000 expected by economists. A strong job market sounds good, but it also lowers the odds of the rate cuts that businesses were hoping for.

On top of that, GitLab said it would cut about 14% of its staff and leave 22 countries. That tells us that enterprise clients are still watching every dollar.

What the Market Is Telling Us About IBM Stock

IBM stock tends to swing around. The market sees the news as meaningful but not enough to change its view of the business.

  • The last big move went the other way. Just two days ago, IBM stock jumped 6% after the company was named a partner for Nvidia’s new Vera Rubin AI accelerators. IBM will help with system building, cloud services, and secure AI storage.
  • That rally got a boost when Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang calmed fears that AI would hurt software companies. Barclays also initiated coverage of IBM stock with an “Overweight” rating.

Investors are warming up to IBM’s long-term quantum bet too, backed by that $10 billion, five-year plan.

Management says it is still on track to build the first large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.

For now, IBM stock is up around 5% this year and sits close to its 52-week high.
