What Happened?
GoDaddy (GDDY) stock jumped after the Financial Times reported that Gen Digital made a preliminary takeover approach. Gen Digital owns well-known security brands like Norton, Avast and LifeLock.
No terms have been shared, and talks are in the early stages. That means a deal is far from certain.
The two companies already know each other well. Both are based in Tempe, Arizona.
GoDaddy started selling Norton Small Business on its platform in September 2025. GoDaddy Registry also took over the technical back end for the Norton domain that same summer.
The fit is easy to see. GoDaddy serves more than 20 million small businesses and creators and manages about 81 million domains.
Gen Digital could sell its security tools to that huge customer base.

Paying for a deal could be tricky.
Gen Digital already carries about $8 billion in net debt. It has $564 million in cash and just over $2 billion in total liquidity.
GoDaddy has about $3.8 billion of its own debt.
StoneX said a deal this size would likely need a meaningful stock component, not just cash.
The firm kept its Buy rating and $140 price target on GoDaddy stock.

What the Market Is Telling Us About GoDaddy Stock
The takeover news is lifting GoDaddy stock after a rough stretch.
The business itself is solid.
- In Q2, revenue grew 7% to $1.3 billion, and adjusted EPS of $1.83 beat estimates of $1.69.
- Free cash flow came in at $443 million.
- GoDaddy has also bought back $852 million of stock this year, cutting its share count by 7%.
But investors have worried about growth. GoDaddy is shifting to its new AI platform, Airo.
Airo is growing fast, with its bookings run rate jumping from $10 million to $50 million in one quarter. Still, it’s replacing some older, higher-priced products like do-it-for-you website services.
That shift is slowing growth in the Applications and Commerce segment. Bookings there grew 7%, down from 9% the quarter before.

Analysts are split. William Blair downgraded the stock to Market Perform.
Raymond James cut its rating to Outperform with a $100 target.
Cantor Fitzgerald has a Neutral rating and a $90 target.
For now, the takeover talk puts a spotlight on GoDaddy stock. If no deal happens, the focus will shift back to whether Airo can restart growth.
