What Happened?
India caught iPhone fever last Friday. Long lines formed outside Apple (AAPL) stores in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
Some buyers reportedly waited over 10 hours to get the new iPhone 18 Pro. Others traveled for hours from smaller cities.
The demand looks stronger than last year. Early channel checks show the iPhone 18 Pro series is seeing nearly 20% higher demand than the iPhone 17 series, according to Counterpoint Research.
That could be a milestone for Apple. Counterpoint expects Apple’s share of India’s smartphone market to hit 10% in 2026.
That would be the first time Apple reaches double digits there. Back in 2022, its share was just 4%.
This matters because India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market. Chinese brands dominate it, with Vivo leading at about 18%.
But most Chinese brands lost share in the June quarter, while Apple and Samsung gained.

The iPhone 18 Pro costs 164,900 rupees, or about $1,700, in India. That’s a lot in a country where yearly income per person is about $2,800.
So how are people affording it? Zero-cost monthly payment plans help.
Buyers can pay less than 10% of the price each month for 12 months. Student offers also help.
IDC says higher prices make the iPhone look even more premium and aspirational.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Apple Stock
For Apple stock investors, India is becoming a real growth story. Apple sold 14.4 million iPhones there in 2025. Sales grew 16%, beating the regional average of 12%.
It fits a bigger trend. In the June quarter, Apple posted record revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16%. iPhone revenue jumped 22%. India was one of the markets that set a June quarter record.
But Apple stock faces risks. Supply is tight. Apple’s shipments to India fell in the June quarter for the first time in over four years, mostly because of supply shortages.
Apple expects those constraints to get significantly worse in the September quarter. It’s guiding for revenue growth of 9% to 11%, a slowdown from the June quarter.

Costs are rising too. Apple raised prices because memory chip costs jumped sharply. Tim Cook called it a “100-year flood” in memory pricing.
Still, the long lines send a clear message. Demand is not the problem.
If Apple can fix supply, India could give Apple stock a strong boost. The next test comes in October, when more iPhone 18 models go on sale.
For now, Apple stock investors have good reason to watch India closely.
