What Happened?
General Motors (GM) said on Tuesday it will move its stock listing to Nasdaq from the New York Stock Exchange, and the stock rose about 5.5% on the news.
GM expects to start trading on Nasdaq on November 17, and will keep its current ticker symbol. It will also become the first legacy automaker on the exchange.
GM is not the first big name to make the switch, as Walmart, Hilton and Palantir have moved recently too. Reuters says these companies want to be closer to tech stocks as investors chase the AI buildout.
CFO Paul Jacobson said GM’s technology-driven strategy is creating value for stockholders and called Nasdaq “a natural home” for the listing.

GM is putting money into new technology, which includes “eyes-off” self-driving on some models. It is also building a new software base for future vehicles, and the goal is to get drivers to pay for digital features.

What the Market Is Telling Us About General Motors Stock
A listing change does not alter how GM makes money, but it shows how the company wants to be seen. General Motors stock is being pitched as a tech-driven story, not just a car maker.
The business gives that pitch some support. In Q3, revenue hit a record $50 billion and adjusted earnings per share rose more than 30% to $3.70. OnStar Digital and Super Cruise brought in over $800 million in recognized revenue, up 15%.
GM also keeps buying back shares and announced a new $20 billion buyback authorization, more than 25% of its current market value, according to management.
For General Motors stock, buybacks shrink the share count and help lift earnings per share.
There are risks. Management said commodity, shipping, and memory costs add about $2 billion in headwinds this year.
It also said 2027 could be harder if those costs stay high.

The question for General Motors stock is whether software and services can grow fast enough to matter.
Anyone following General Motors stock should watch the November 17 switch and the 2027 outlook. General Motors stock could also see more interest from tech-focused investors after the move.
